Can a licensed U.S. doctor (M.D.) practice general medicine in the DR?

It is doable but as others have said very hard and will take two years or more to get it done. I tried the same thing when I got here 7 years ago and really only wanted to see and treat expats and tourists (like you) but the process described above, exams including your specialty boards (in Spanish) as well as having to "serve" a two year internship in some outliying clinic was more than I wanted to go through. After 20 years of practice and teaching at a major University in the US, I just retired.

This is too bad as I could have done so much teaching to the local doctors as well. But you will also find a resistance from the local docs as they are afraid you are taking money out of their pocket.........the DR's loss

It is all on their website under servicios. My husband went through it to get his law degree (done here) legalized and stamped by the Ministry before sending it to the Procuraduria. I think the process is fairly standard and the website also details what is needed if your qualification was done overseas. There is a branch in Santiago as well as Santo Domingo. https://mescyt.gob.do/

I am a licensed internist moving to Santiago in 12 months. Already am building a house with equipped with a space for a medical office. I would like to offer my services mostly to English-speaking expats who would be more comfortable with a US trained physician. I truly enjoy the practice of medicine, do not want to retire, and plan to keep fees to a minimum. What do I need to do to legally practice medicine? Any direction would help.

Would be interesting in learning what happened with his move and medical status in the DR?
