Where did you here this ?
Its not quite like that. Canadian need to get a letter from the embassy saying the licence is good and legal in Canada, then off you go to one of the minestries, pay a fee, after translation. Then off to get your Dominican licence, no test...nada. Issued a 4 year Dominican DL. My wife and I both did it.

The National Police is instructed to not ask anything from tourists and simply let them go. Despite the wituation with Venezuela and Venezuelans in the country, they are still given that treatment by many police officer.
Interesting Nals, I wasn't aware of that.

But of course you speak Spanish and could have passed the test. It's not that complex

So you need special certifications.
Would you just surrender your home license?
Won't you need that for return visits to Canada?
Or is that easily acquired
The certification makes sense because then the Dominicans know it is a legit license. I've personally only ever held one license at a time, because generally it ties into residency. I'm assuming that the Canadians who have obtained a Dominican license use that one to drive in Canada should they return (although they may need to obtain an International Driving Permit since it's in Spanish).

When I did it the process was a bit confusing but it worked. Had to have my Canadian license verified and by the Canadian Embassy office in Veron. Next I had to take that paperwork to the Dominican Embassy in SDQ and they had to verify that the Canadians properly verified it. Then it was off to the Dominican drivers license place and argue with them that this was all correct. Plus we also had to have vision tests and our blood typed again as God knows your blood type changes frequently.

It took a couple days and cost about $300 USD each but at the time I think it was well worth it. That was the process about 14 years ago. Now spin the wheel and throw darts at it. How complicated can it be. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

That's because it's illegal to record any police officer or military soldier, general, etc. Sometimes they might simply not do anything if you look like a tourists doing typical touristy recordings and they happen to get recorded or they move away, say go around a tree so they aren't in the vision of the camera. In other cases they will approach you and force you to either erase the part where they are recorded and they have to see you erase it or they will confiscate your camera or phone. In the worst case scenario they could arrest you if you do things to object them getting your camera or phone off of you.
Yeah, and two things every tourista ahould know. Como puedo ayudarte? Calms things down, and if it doesn't Abogada.

If you go with a driving school they will help you with the whole process included the exam (which is very easy) with little or no Spanish.
A lot easier than the process of getting all the legalization and certificates from the embassy..ect. This way you get to keep your USA driver license and also a DR license. Of course you need you Dominican cedula.

My wife and I exchanged our NY state driver's license for a dominican one in 2000. IIRC I got some printout of my license from DMV (driving record??? not sure, don't remember), took it to state department got it verified and stamped. In DR I had it translated it to spanish then verified and stamped at cancilleria. I went to dominican motor vehicle (don't recall what it was called then but it wasn't INTRANT) checked vision, blood and took photo. About 30 minutes later walked out with license in hand. Take all this with a rock of salt it was 22 years ago but the point is that they use to do the USA license exchange. The process was straight forward. I don't know why they are not accepting USA license for exchange anymore. Maybe they are but certain state don't have the verification facility???? I know it wasn't difficult and quite common in NYC back in the days.

This is the best advice in this whole thread. Why jump through hoops. I can get a blind man a license here easier.............

I agree that a driving school can help prepare someone for a license. BUT:

When did you get your license? Easy enough if you can speak Spanish well enough.

Things might have changed if it was not recently. My first DR license was a fake which I drove on and renewed until the computer system finally caught up to me and I had to "start over". That fake license worked just as well as my ''real" one. I had to get a DR license since California refused to renew my DR license and of course there is that pesky 90 day foreign license validity issue.

The previous location for Puerto Plata INTRANT had a small private room where the verbal test was responses to situations on a video.
That office moved to the center of Puerto Plata. I got help many years ago to some questions I did not quite understand. That is not going to happen today.

Now, the location of the exam in Puerto Plata is in a large room in full view of the main staff with responses to a rather long series of questions with multiple choice answers. Nobody is going to help you pass the test there and I suspect you will need to understand Spanish to a fair degree to pass that test.
