To all the above, I might add that a
carro publico or
carro de choncho, drives a
route to which it's owner acquires a much defended "right", very much like a city bus. In some cities they have designated stops and places they stop traditionally and many stretches of main roads where they are not allowed to stop (
no subir pasageros) but do stop nevertheless.
They can be waved down... preferably with your fingers indicating how large a party you are looking to upload, while many drivers, honking and whistling may by show of fingers also indicate how much "space" he has.
They are not considered a recomendable SAFE mean of transportation in the main cities after dusk. Most working Dominicans using conchos on a daily basis will be able to tell you their story of having been assaulted, in such a ride.
If you expect to enjoy the relative comfort of riding alone in the front passanger seat, just pay double the fare and the driver will cut one of his finges off
