Los Sombrosos del Merengue - album title - Sin Fronteras
Really upbeat and fun to dance to.
Also, as Virginia said, Sergio Vargas and Antony Santos.
Here is a scenario:
Friday, March 12/04, -5C, Nestor Falls, On
Husbands and kids out playing hockey in the driveway
Wives in a heated garage, drinking wine
Someone calls out - Marlie teach us how to dance merengue and salsa
Marlie grabs ghetto blaster and puts on Los Sombrosos
5 crazy 40+ yr old women, dancing in a garage, "teacher" hasn't danced merengue for a few years but hey, these women don't know the difference!!!!
Saturday, March 13/04 - who cares what the weather is - Nestor Falls, On
Marlie on couch duty - hips hurt so bad can hardly walk!!!!!!
Now that was some good music!!!!!!!

Thanks this list is excellent. Do these artists have a particular song though that stands out and everyone knows?

From one of his greates hits CD's I got:

El Calor
Dejame Entrar
Me Enamore
Yo me Muero Porti
Cojelo Ahi

All Crazy fast merengues to dance to from Antony Santos.

Also, one La Langosta from Amarfis (I think?) was playing a lot in December and it was great to dance to.

For Salsa lovers: my favorite songs of ALL times is Lloraras by Oscar De Leon - if there is no partner I will dance it like Lola all by myself!)

I can't believe all the great artists mentioned, and hardly anyone gave credit to "Los Toros Band" - my favorites for bachata. Download nearly anything by them if you want a great bachata CD. Other personal favorites:

Bachata
Quiero saber de ti - Monchy y Alexandra
Hoja en blanco - Monchy y Alexandra
Nada de Nada - Frank Reyes (I LOVE FRANK REYES )
Maldito Orgullo - Frank Reyes
Adios - Zaccarias Ferreira
Te Quiero a Ti - Zaccarias Ferreira
Otra dia Sin Ti - Joe Veras
Por tu Amor - Joe Veras
Tu Sabes - Elvis Martinez
Pagame tu Vicio - Antony Santos
Ay Querida - Antony Santos
Ense?ame a Olvidar - Aventura

Merengue
Beso a Beso - To?o Rosario
Moviendo la Cadera - Los Hermanos Rosario
El Costo de la Vida - Juan Luis Guerra
Tu Vas a Volar - Rubby Perez
Como Baila - Grupo Mania

Can't think of anything more right now...will post more if I think of them.

I can't really remember most of the names of the songs because the last time I was in the DR was in the 2002 and I live in Washington state (where there is not many dominicans, neither radio stations playing it), plus I am into Country Music right now.
Anyways,
I am going to the Univision forum and I will sure get an update :knockedou Virginia

Well you can try a simple start with "Meregue" and "Bachata Hits" those usually have a good selection of many different artists. But for merengue: Jovhanny Polanco, Alex Bueno, Mala Fe, Papi Sanchez; those are just a bit of the many praised domican merengue artists. Bachata: ELVIS MARTINEZ (they call him their "camaron"), Monchy & Alexandra, Frank Reyes, El Prodigio, and many more.
For all the new dominican music and artists check out the website:

Music.. Does Norwegian Turbonegro count??? They should.. Some of the
below might be quite shite, I'm not sure how well my critical abilities are
developed when it comes to Latin music. Zacharias Ferreira makes my
toes itch though, and that's never a good sign.(AMOOR!! DOLOR!! ALMAA!!)

Grupo Niche are perhaps my favorites. Great band.
A lot of what Marc Anthony has done in Spanish is very good, but I only
heard that after I heard his English stuff, which to me is hardly more than
an ugly Ricki Martin. ;) In Spanish he's worthwhile methinks.

Brenda Starr, like Anthony is quite polished but I think she's quite good still.
India..
Lots of older salsa but I don't know the artists well enough yet. Cubans.

Cabas and Juanes from Colombia, and oh well, Shakira too of course.. :)

Sissies like Alejandro Sanz, Luis Miguel, Alejandro Fernandez I listen to, but
I'm not sure if I should. Same goes for cumbia.

Argentinians like Possi ( love her.. ), Calemaro and even Leonardo Favio (!)
Los Abuelos de Nada, Los Rodriguez.....

Brazilians like Daniela Mercury and esp. Carlinhos Brown ( he's great.. ). I
could also mention Djavan, I can't stand the guy but others do. Tribalistas.

Even Proyecto Uno and DLG at times.. In very small doses.

Julieta Venegas. I believe she's Mexican.

Sites like allmusic.com are useful for research. One can check which artists
the artist one likes has worked with, go for them and take it from there.

There are others too, but this will do for now. :)
