Buenas.

I was looking for flights to go to the Dominican [DR] at the end of April/first two weeks of May for a couple weeks. The flights from Canada (I live in Ottawa) are quite expensive (charters cost about C$1000; scheduled flights are about C$850). I was looking for flights from New York on Travelocity, and apparently ASD has a fare for US$234 (Fare: "MEXSALE"). You can't book ASD flights off Travelocity; I was wondering if anyone if this fare is accurate. It would be a great deal!

De todos modos, if anyone knows of any deals from Canada or the Northeastern US around that time, it'd be really helpful.

Thanks.

Are you asking about flights to the Caribbean island of Dominica or to the Dominican Republic?

Cheap flights...

I live in Toronto and the cheapest flights to the Dominican Repulic can be found on www.selloffvacations.com. I check daily for flights leaving from Toronto and every week find flights for between $325 and $400 (incl. tax.). The trick is to book within the week you are planning on travelling (the prices will be more expensive for peak times like March break). You will not find a travel agency selling tickets cheaper than this site! Good luck and try and be flexible on the date of your departure to find the best deal!

I was talking about the Dominican Republic. This is a Dominican Republic message board ;).

And wow, Selloffvacations.com, they really do have some unbelievable deals!

Gracias por su ayuda.

Then you should edit your post - Also here's some advice

Since you asked about flying to the "Dominican" and a Dominican is a person who lives there not the name of the place someone was pointing out you should go back and edit the post, and then ask about flights to either:

"The DR" (or "RD" en espanol)
The "Dominican Republic"

Air only flights to the DR from Toronto are not C$1000 and you may try www.belairtravel.com as a site with a good search engine that if you put in a date that is not available it will tell you nearby dates which are and that is a lot less frustrating. Also there are 4 or 5 main arrival cities (LRM. PUJ, POP, STI, SDQ) and you should say which you are trying to get to. Flights from Ottawa are quite limited but seem t be available up to April 11th or so (Air Canada Vacations for C$757 to PUJ on the 11th).

For example 2 week flights to Punta Cana (PUJ) leaving April 24th are C$618 on Skyservice. To Puerto Plata (POP) leaving the 26th, C$628.

Keep in mind after Mid-April the charters to the DR from Canada start drying up other than POP and PUJ which seem to be at least once a week.

The plan to get to NYC then fly on ASD sounds like a lot of work vs. non-stop and for less money. You can also fly on AA to MIA then on to any of the arrival cities, which I do 6-9 times a year.

I've looked around too for all airports in Dominican, and I couldn't find any really good deals from Canada before someone offered Selloffvacations.com. (When I said C$1000, I was quoting flights after taxes, which would raise the ones you showed to about C$900, and flights from closer to Ottawa were about C$1000 after taxes.) That's why I thought it might be cheaper to go from New York, since getting to New York and taking a flight from there would amount to less. I'm really fine with arriving at any airport. I'm ultimately staying in Ingenio Consuelo near San Pedro de Macor?s, but I'm fine with taking guaguas or other buses across the country, since I wouldn't mind going around a bit anyway. Thanks with your help with Belair Travel. From what I can tell, they use the same database as Selloffvacations.com, whose last-minute deals are amazing, especially since I'm pretty flexible with departure dates. But thanks for the help.

And regarding the Dominican/Dominican Republic, sorry. We've just always referred to the country as 'Dominican' around here; maybe it's an Ottawan thing. Plus, the people I know in the DR even call the country Dominicana, so maybe that's where I got it from. Sorry for any confusion, and thanks for everyone's help.

I do not know the price but here is another option

Try to get the price in CO. They have a very good connection YOW-EWR-SDQ

Leaving YOW at 6:40am arriving SDQ 2:05pm

The way back is leaving SDQ 3:20pm arriving YOW 10:12pm.

Please note this is only Monday to friday. No connection on Sat and Sun.

Check the price to see if is OK. YOW to EWR is only 1 hour 15 minutes so is easy to get there. On summer you will have daily connections due to the second CO frequency EWR-SDQ.

I hope this could help you.

Well good luck with finding a flight. Whether we've always all called it the Dominican or not it is still wrong. And Dominicana is ridiculous. I find it ironic that in this last post in your opening sentence you call it Dominican again.

Anyhow, hopefully you can find a non-stop - if you are looking for charters and are going to SP then try to find ones to La Romana - it'll be closest since there seem to be no more flights to Santo Domingo unless there's a cruise leaving from SD and then usually th eflight is full for those curise people.

Keep in mind flights from NYC are from Kennedy so if you fly into NY (LaGuardia) from Ottawa or Toronto you then have to switch airports. I did that once and it was a real grind and took forever. Maybe you can fly to Newark from Ottawa and connect to Continental's EWR-SDQ flight. I have a friend in Orange and he takes it all the time and is quite happy with their service.

Dominicans calling the DR 'Dominicana' - it has been known. But 'Dominican' in English is ridiculous.

Wow. Ha ha, I never thought that the name of the country would be such a contentious issue, :classic:. I hope I didn't offend anyone; in all seriousness, the Dominicans I know do all say Dominicana, and in Ottawa, we do refer to the Dominican Republic as simply Dominican or the Dominican (if someone said, "I'm going to the DR this summer," no one would have any idea what they were talking about), so when I write that, it's just from habit. In the future, I'll keep in mind to write DR when posting here since it seems to annoy some people. Sorry about all the confusion; I really don't mean to offend anyone.

www.gotraveldirect.com has great deals, flight only, from Ottawa. I think you will find better prices from Ottawa to POP and PUJ with them. Also, you are right about Canadians refering to the DR as the Dominican. I'm in Halifax, and when I tell people I'm going to the DR, they usually look at me kinda funny and say " gee, i hope it isn't serious". lol Here everyone refers to it as the Dominican as we are quite prone to shortening names of people and places. My husband ( a Dominican) calls it Dominicana quite often. Personally, I dont see the harm if your intentions are good. The Dominican, DR, RD, la republica dominicana or just dominicana, santo domingo, paradise, etc. are all good in my books.
Have a good trip and good luck with your price shopping.

Sooo crazy-off-topic

We've so talked about this before, but to say "en Dominicana" is widespread, not new, and therefore correct -- not ridiculous.

"The Dominican" is gaining popularity, as attested to by these boards. I'm not that bothered by it, as it's a term of affectionate familiarity, obviously not a reference to a person. Think: the Atlantic (Ocean) or the Rockies (Mountains); we have a street in Montreal that is referred to as "the Main." Completely subjective. By contrast, it bugs me to no end that people say they "had a fun day." FUN as an adjective totally sucks for me, but people do it anyway.

I used to call the DR "Domin," as in "I got my ticket to Domin." It didn't really take off.

other charter options to DR

I also live in Ottawa and have used the following websites to book charter/air only travel to DR. Direct flights from Ottawa to POP end the first or second week in April.

http://www.wholesaletravel.com/aironly.tpl (Toronto departures)

http://www.tripdepot.com/ (Toronto Departures)

I have also used www.selloffvacations.com -which is also quite good and you are able to check the availablity from different departure cities.

My next trip to DR is in April for 25 days. The cost for a charter and scheduled flight are about the same for the length of my stay. I ended up booking a flight with Air Canada and will leave from Ottawa and make a connection in Toronto.

Buenas suerte Jruta

In Jan 2004 after much research I booked with http://www.sunseekers.ca/frame/sun-charter.html and later found http://www.holidaymarkettravel.com/main_aironly.htm.

Sunseekers is out of Winnipeg, I think, and did alright by me. Holiday Market is out of Toronto and comes highly recommended by a group I met while in Heaven. It often matches or is slightly cheaper than Sunseekers and I found them to offer the cheapest flights out of Toronto.

Holiday Market Travel is showing $225 plus txs for YYZ(Toronto)-POP-YYZ for April 11, 1 or 2 weeks. Excellent price!
