Capacity in short-term rentals is more than 100% of hotel capacity in DR

The Ministry of Tourism says there are more than 85,000 hotel rooms in the Dominican Republic. But the Ministry of Tourism says the overall accommodations capacity doubles when the more than 93,000 rooms available through rental platforms, such as Airbnb, is added.

Tourism Minister David Collado said at the Fitur Travel Fair in Madrid that the government is working out an agreement with Airbnb. In its initial stage, the agreement will not contemplate taxation but instead focus on ensuring security and quality control matters.

In Punta Cana and Santo Domingo, entire condominiums have been built to accommodate short-term rental demands.
