I've been looking for a good place to rent a car for day or weekend trips, but I'm baffled by the insurance. I've hunted around and then end up at the GauGau.
Every place that I looked is a two day rental, but then I ask about seguridad and they get a blank look. I suspect that's okay for locals, but I'm not willing to risk it (and yes I know about the Hotel de Carcel with a pool for gringos in accidents if you buy the correct insurance).
Avis with some haggling on insurance ends up at $50/day. Alamo seems more reasonable, but I have no clue where to find them in the airport and their office is always closed. However, the insurance with Alamo seems more concerned with insuring the car then in liability in an accident. Lots of rental agencies in Puerto Plata, but no insurance although I gave up after the first 5.
Can perpetual travelers (like myself with no car) just purchase blanket insurance for rentals? Is Amex an option?
I'm *not* looking for a nice car. Just a POS to drive around in that doesn't attract attention.
This must be a FAQ. Any help?
