wow, not even whole day to stay.

That is typical of most ports and no more than you'd expect. This is a new port for Carnival and it has to be developed as a destination. Carnival doesn't even know yet whether the one-day excursions it is offering will be successful, or whether others/more are needed.

It is no different than anything else. You start slow and try to build.

The hype put out by DR officials and drum beaters like Pichardo have obviously caused people to expect far more than is realistic in the first year.

The Carnival port in Maimon can only be seen as a work in progress. All the hype is detrimental since it is unrealistic and causes people here to have false expectations.

The DR, after all, is a very small pea in a big pod and chances are very few on the first Carnival cruises know very little about it.

It is going to take time for Maimon to be developed as a cruise port.

A very big lack right now is information that passengers can use to decide whether they want to book a cruise that comes here and which if any excursions that they want to sign up for. Every cruise line for every cruise has a page describing the excursions being offered and feedback, both positive and negative, from people who booked it previously about each. Being the first year, Carnival does not have that.

More important, there are no outside sources of information. For example, I' m booked on a cruise starting in Chile, going around Cape Horn, and ending in Buenos Aires. For each port, I can find a great deal of feedback on each excursion available on TripAdviser. There is none of that yet for Maimon. And I can go to websites like Cruise Critic and find a huge amount of information about each port and each excursion written by people who have been there and done that.

That does not yet exist for Maimon.

It is going to take time to develop Maimon as anything but a day on the beach, like Halfmoon Cay in the Bahamas, the Cay that Holland America owns. They go there on every Bahamas cruise because they own it, even though there is very little to do that day but go to the beach.

that's what i mean. it kinda clashes with hopes that hundreds of tourists will suddenly flood NC shops/bars/restaurants. i suppose docking time means arrival so the passengers will not be on shore within seconds? and that departure time does not mean the tourist need to be back on board with 5 minutes to spare?

Hard to say about arrival time. The ship will almost certainly be at the dock before then. Passengers may be disembarking at 8.

Departure time is another thing. You better be back on board before then.

Yes, the over hyping is a bad thing because expectations have been raised to unreasonable levels.

There are a couple of excursions in Sosua. As I recall, diving, snorkeling, and Sosua Beach after seeing Puerto Plata. It will be interesting to see the response to those excursions as well as the others. It will be easy to find the feedback on the internet to see how many stars they get and what the comments are once the cruises to Amber Cove start.

dv8, I looked at the excursions. Most are 5-6 hours. The longest is 7 to Paradise Island off Punta Rusa. The certified 2-tank dive in Sosua Bay is 5 hours. The visit to Puerto Plata, including the Brugal factory, then to Cabarete Beach for lunch is 6 hour excursion that costs $49.99. Lunch is included.

So it is one to Sosua, not 2, and one to Cabarete.

PUERTO PLATA-
Unofficially reported the construction of an estate called "Maim?n Center"
in this town located in the western part of Puerto Plata, which is being planned by disposal
of several employers in Santiago, owners of the land that belonged to the extinct Yapur Dumit.
He published the weekly newspaper El Faro, buildings and dwellings that are projected to build
will be financed at low cost, which is part of an initiative by a large number of works that are
projected to build in this municipal district, Center of the re:launch of tourism which will arrive
aboard two giant ships owned by Carnival Cruises Lines which received a concession from the Government for 30 years and that dinamitar? tourism in the area creating jobs and services.
Since already several professionals of the construction work the design of what will be the lifting
of the estate, to be located in the Centre of Maimon, exactly in the vicinity of the play of baseball
and softball league sports Louis Paradis, sports park that will be transferred to another place to
give way to the construction of a central park by the Ministry of tourism. Points that urbanization "Maim?n Center" is one of the achievements of the current director of the District Board; Ram?n Salda?a, which years ago is being advised by the Wadi Dumit Santiago businessman, with whom it maintains good relations since before been elected to that position by the majority vote of all the Maimoneros.
The details of the construction of "Maim?n Center", will be released immediately to receive the approval from government agencies, while Carlos L?pez surveyor, is part of the team that carried
out topographic measurements with a view to the lifting of this new estate.

Where are the overnight stays? I see they just don't exist. But the carefully controlled excursions will.

Where are the overnight stays? I see they just don't exist. But the carefully controlled excursions will.

As I said in my previous posts on the subject, the expectations have been raised too high by Dominican officials who have a dream not grounded in reality.

This is not to say there won't be overnight stays in the future, but certainly not in the next few years.

When you say "carefully controlled excursions", I don't know what your point is. The excursions being offered at Maimon are very much like the excursions offered elsewhere in the Caribbean. The main control is that the excursions can't start before the ship docks and must end before the ship departs.

It won't be long, but probably not in the first year, that there will be private tour operators competing for the excursion business. They exist in every port and the are popular because they charge less for pretty much the same excursions as those offered by the ship. They probably won't be allowed inside the cruise port, but they will be just outside the gate. And they will have websites where people can book their excursions.

But this is the first year, there is no history, passengers don't know what to expect.

A couple of years from now, if all goes well the first year or two, this could be a very popular port.

But overnight stays are certainly not in the immediate future, and I have no idea how those claiming this got the idea. I'm sure Carnival didn't tell them there would be overnight stays in the first year.

Aqua Adventures. Pablo is the owner, really nice, good guy!

I don't know the business, but this could be a good thing for him. After the first cruise that he has customers from we will be able to see what people are saying in their reviews. Hopefully it will be positive.

By carefully controlled, I mean carefully controlled to maximize revenues.

Still doesn't make much sense to me.

Revenues are maximized when a lot of people sign up. That doesn't happen, over time, if the feedback from those who took the excursion isn't good.

I don't see how offering excursions that people enjoy taking in order to sell more excursions in the future is anything to make an issue about.

In any case, don't most businesses try to maximize revenue?

I believe Wind is referring to "controlling" the tickets and cash from disappearing.

Correct, to keep as much money in the hands of the port owners not the local businesses. Of course the people running the tours and feeding lunches stand to make some money, but it is by no means an open agenda.
