Just saw this article on MSN.

Interesting that it never mentions Puerto Plata, and let's all pretend that the author did not commit the classic "Dominican" faux pas.

It seems the author did not make this error at all

Mr. Donald CEO of Carnival seems to be the one quoted using this term and since his company just invested $85 million dollars in this country he can call it whatever he likes me thinks

holy jeezus..that is one insightful observation. yes, these guys have done their homework, and maybe prefer to call it the Dominican, as opposed to the Dominican Republic, to ward off any imaginings by people who have heard negative things about the DR. just like Royal Caribbean calling the port in Haiti Labadee, as opposed to Haiti.

Nobody could possibly make the connection that The Dominican is the Dominican Republic. :paranoid:

I really don't think that the average cruise passenger gives a squirrel monkey's toss as to the name of the latest "Ship Stop".
Call it what you like, they won't remember anyway by the time they get back in Moe's bar...

We are looking forward to bringing hundreds of Fathom travelers…to work alongside people in the Dominican communities to make a significant impact in terms of education, environment and economic development."

He probably said it with a straight face too.

At least we know now what extended stay guests are "uselessly" supposed to do while they are here.

This is a disaster waiting to happen!
Carnaval has no clue what it's going to be like working with the Dom Gov, or Dominicans.
They should hire "Conchman" to run the place!

I look forward to 100's of "I Told You So's"!!!!!

While I can understand how people can be talked into these "feel good" adventures, the evangelicals do it all the time wasting ungodly amounts of money via air flights, I fail to see how it can make a difference into anyone's bottom line but the sponsors of such cruises.

that is the intent. Carnival has found a niche, and will sell tickets to people who want to FEEL GOOD ABOUT THEMSELVES because they helped a group of people in a tropical country to be able to say hello in a foreign language.

And the others on "shore leave" like drunken sailors will be off to "The Field of Dreams". If you make it, they will.... Fathom that for a moment.

The optimist in me wants so badly for this not to be a train wreck (ship wreck?), but I just don't see how this could possibly do more good than harm.

Perhaps the organizations running these "experiences", such as Wine to Water, will provide additional sensitivity training. Even then, this does not sit right in my gut.
