and no fear mongering and talking about diseases necessary. all the tour guide needs to say is that dominican mozzies are very thirsty and here you can buy OFF so they do not bother you, only 10 bucks a can, thank you, enjoy your day.

i see a different scenario. Carnival will make them buy the OFF on the ship, telling them that the stuff they buy on the shore might be counterfeit. therein lies the entrepreneurial opportunity.

you have to love this...

even the motoconchos are expecting to profit from this development. they really believe that Martha and Herb from Ashville are going to get on some Chinese bike with them.

Possibly - the photos belong to the father of a DR1er. Maybe he'll see this and ask his dad.

will be next to impossible to have no 'trickle down' effect......

can't help but be a positive impact......

thinking otherwise is just a wish for failure....and counter productive

there will be some trickle down benefits, yes. nobody here denies that. the main thrust of most of the discourse here is that the government told the people that when the ships came, there would be a cornucopia of riches and bountiful blessings pouring down upon the region, as far afield as Cabarete. they told them that each passenger spent on the average 100 dollars, and that is not necessarily true, because the average spend in the DR is way lower than that, and spend is not a matter that can be predicted with any meaningful accuracy. what some of us have been saying is that expectations have been raised by the politicos, and the merchants are in for a disappointment. even the motoconchos.

I dunno...

the DR is one of the best/most frequented tourist destinations in the Caribbean, if not the world.

to infer that dunces run the show begs the question of who is the dunce....

Even if 50 crap jobs are created, and those 50 folks have to get to / from their crappy jobs, isn't that better than nothing?

actually, of 22 caribbean destinations surveyed in 2012, the DR ranked number 18 in terms of cruise tourism expenditure. it is not exactly a cruise tourism powerhouse , even in caribbean perspective.

gorgon... I'm talking tourism in general, not a specific category, like cruise ships.

Yes, TTTTT, ONE job is progress

How many of those passengers will enjoy themselves and return for a land visit ???

Exposure is the name of the game
