Okay, I'm leaving for Puerto Plata in 6 days. I will be staying at the Casa Marina Reef hotel. Does anyone know what the all-inclusive food is like? Are there a lot of prostitutes in Puerto Plata/Sosua area?? Will my two friends and I be really uncomfortable in the evenings walking around? I am excited, but I'm hoping that there isn't too much of a "bad element". What's the cost of a taxi from the La Union airport? Where would I get a taxi??

there are A few Prostitute yes some times, like in every other area of Latin America/Europe/Asia/north America where Tourist are

here in sosua some people who does not have nothing else to do then just staying in the bar 24 hour's per day notice them more due the geographical strategy of sosua with 2 principal Street

but I have many friends that goes there married/single and until now they did not give me any bad comments since they have being to busy exploring the goods things of my country then to stop by to look at the irrelevant world wide problems that had became part of ours society imported from Europe/north America
since if you and you Friends do what they come by for just they holidays
the Prostitute will keep doing they business I don't see why you/ore them should bother each others,

about the meal I had friends that had mad holidays in deferents time on the Casa marina there they told me it was not bad

about the Taxi it is about 200/250 pesos 17/18 us

Re: The taxi will find you ...

Had 2 weeks at the reef in Aug/Sept this year and the food, place and staff were absoulutely superb. As for prostitutes, we went to Sousa a couple of times (me, partner and 2 children) and we didn't see any, it's like Roberto says if you're not looking there's no problem.
Have a great time, I'm sure you will.

Casa Marina

You will love the place! I, myself, loved the food there. Try the icecream! There is always lots of drinkable water around as well. Be sure to go to the Italian restaurant and take in the shows at night. They are wonderful. I was down for two weeks in April/May. I plan on heading down again this upcoming April for two weeks. And the staff is wonderful. Enjoy your trip!

You will love the Casa Marina Reef, and these guys are both right. I spent so much time "out of the resort" that I thought I would not go "all inclusive" this time. But I emailed them and asked for a rate almost half of what was posted on their web site for a single, and they GAVE IT TO ME !!
The prostitutes are many, but like it has been said, only if you are looking. It is not like you picture in US cities of scantilly-dressed girls hanging out on the corner saying "hey baby"....they are mostly nicely dressed and in the bars and disco's waiting to be approached. At least that has been my experience.

When I stayed there, the food was pretty bad. My girlfriend thought it was so bad she couldn't eat it. We found great food next door at the On the Waterfront restaurant though, and the meals at the Sosua by the Sea restaurant which is next to the Casa Marina on the other side, are decent as well.

See http://www.dr1.com/hotels/database/NorSosCasaG3LNG63V.htm for the entire report or click on the link below.

Jim,

I'm sorry you and your girlfriend didn't enjoy the food at the reef, all I can say is that they must have improved a lot since you visited. I've travelled to holiday in Spain, France, Belgium and the Canaries and can honestly say that the food at the Reef was comparable if not better, we didn't even eat in any of the speciality restaurants only the buffet and the food and service was great.
The staff at the resort were always smilling and friendly and bearing in mind the long hours they work this is even more remarkable.
I wouldn't hesitate going back there and would recommend it to anyone, maybe now a couple of years has passed you should give it another chance and re-visit, I'm sure you'd love it.
Best Regards

Re: Casa Marina Reef/Puerto Plata *PIC*

Brian,

You must have different standards for food, beverage, and service. By the way, smiling and friendly do not equal service unless combined with attentiveness, speed, efficiency, and anticipating guests' needs.

I revisited the Casa Marina in October of 1999. Little had changed, from my observation. One E-mail I received from somebody that visited the Casa Marina resort and had later read my report said, "On the bus to the airport, everybody was raving about the resort. I wondered if perhaps I had been at a different resort."

It seems in general, that Europeans do find the resorts all across the Dominican Republic to be deserved of the stars they rate themselves, while many Americans and some Canadians are dismayed at what passes for high quality. Just read the reports on Debbies Dominican page. Europeans consistently make comments such as "it was amazing", ... That's just my observation.

When I see a duck, I call it a duck. I've visited some VERY nice resorts in the Dominican Republic, but the Casa Marina wasn't one of them. The Casa Marina is beautiful resort, and that is where it ends. It is a budget resort and a decent value. I never said we didn't enjoy our vacation at Casa Marina. We did. It was a good value. We didn't pay very much for it and received a lot. But it was still a budget vacation and the food, beverages, services, and ammenities received were in no way worthy of praise. The little places we found outside the resort, however, were. What does one expect for US$60 per person, all-inclusive? We got what we paid for.

For about the same price, one can book a room at the Hamaca Hotel in Boca Chica (via a tour agent), and I can tell you, the Hamaca blows the Casa Marina away in the quality of food and service under its current management.

I too have traveled all over the world, including North and South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. My point of reference for this report however was for resorts all across the Dominican Republic, the rest of the Caribbean, and Mexico.

If one were to go by the reports I see written on Debbies Dominican page, great as her web site is, one would think that every single resort in the Dominican Republic is "amazing", and that just isn't the case.

I too would not hesitate to recommend Casa Marina to friends visiting the north coast that were looking for something in that price range. As I said, it is a decent value. But I would not rave about the quality of the food and service, because it just wasn't worthy of praise.

We all have different ideas of what constitutes high quality food, service, and ammenties. Did you by chance sample "On the Waterfront", and if so, how would you compare it to the Casa Marina? I also ate many meals next door at Sosua by the Sea, which were low cost (US$10 typically), and I found the food, drink, and service at that small hotel to be far superior. Of course, Casa Marina has a far nicer looking property than either of the above mentioned businesses, and I can't criticize the beauty of the place.

Below is a photo of the beach at Casa Marina from my trip in October 1999 to Sosua.

Re: Casa Marina Reef/Puerto Plata-For Every one

all That I have to say this time are that everything are matter of individual expectations/personality's etc, that goes From Love/meals/Musics etc
That someone insist that Casa Marina are bad/good it is irrelevant sine that not every one will never agree to that person version no matter wish are th version unless of course we are monkeys that follows/do every things what others do/say
I have being in the Casa marina in deferent time I do agree that the service are not for fancy people that are expecting that the staff behave like in Las Vegas/Montecarlo/Buenos Aires ETC
like I also Agree that the Restaurants are to small in the Casa marina Beach wish take away any Romantic atmosphere
that A Restaurant should have
but i don't agree that the meal can not be eat-ed
there are for sure better Hotel/Restaurant then the Casa Marina
but so bad it is definitively not.

I repeat spetialy wen the Clients are not going to stay in 24 hours at days in
for the service the staff are not spidy Gonzalez since that the Humidity are very high and the pay very low i Don't have it fair that some body expect them to get A heart attack for A lousy payment of $200 Us per months wen some incompetent people are making over 1000/2000/4000/7000:00 US each months.

I had always saw that people expecting A fancy Service they always pay much more money for they holidays.
and still in the end they don't end Better person wen they goes home s good/bad are Relative Lady's and gentleman we all know that lets stop this snobbish:) thing OK? wen we all knows what are the all inclusive/Gourmet Restaurant

Best Regards

Roberto
