I'm getting a little bit nervous about making withdrawls from the ATMS now after reading about the scams and problems with the ATM machines in the DR. A safer backup plan for withdrawls would really put my mind at ease.

Thanks

Hi there, these scams are far from being a problem just with DR ATM machines. Here in ther UK it happens alot (for some reason all the people caught for it have either been from Nigeria or Poland). I never use the ATMs outside banks if I can go inside - its so easy for these scammers to do what they do and get all your details. One of the main scams is where they put a false front on the machine and your card gets stuck they then have your card, at the same time they have managed to watch you PIN (could be something as simple as someone standing behind you with a mobile phone videoing! - (is that a word, doesn't look right). So they have your card and your PIN! And it happens all round the world.

Cash machines

ok, I've used the outside ATM's at banks plenty of times before in Puerto Plata but how does that work at Scotia Bank withdrawing with the assistance of a teller? Is it the same as going to my own bank here in Canada? No it is not the same as having a tellers assistance. I was having problems with the amount I was trying to withdraw (I didn't do the conversion properly) so I wen inside talked to a nice lady at the counter and she went out side with me and walked me through. I felt really comfortable using that machine and that bank.

Atm

Hey everyone, thanks for the information about using the assistance of a teller at the bank to withdraw money with your ATM card. I'm just a little head shy about some of the things I've heard about ATM's in the DR, and I don't want my bank account cleaned out. Going inside the bank seems like a safer option, especially if I'm going to withdraw a substantial amount of money. Yes, we have ATM fraud issues here in Canada too. However all of the banks have security cameras at their ATM machines and I see they now have put devices on the machines that prevent people from putting anything but an ATM card into the recepticle.

I think the problems with ATM's in DR are extremeliy exaggerated. I have now been here for 9 years, the last 5 more or less full time. I use the ATM's as my only source to get cash, and for the first time, this tuesday i noticed that that my account had been debited double for the amount of 40.000 pesos.
I'm pretty relaxed, and gave it a rest for some days withouth doing anything, and today my account was credited for the same amount.
