hey all,

was just wondering if its possible to cash a cheque from the canadian government here in the DR somewhere?

I received a nice cheque back home and my family can send it to me to cash here, but I dont know if I can cash it here, but going back to pick it up in canada and cashing is not an option at the moment. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Santiagoguy

As far as I know, there is a provision in Canadian banking law which prevents the cashing of Canadian checks in the DR. As part of my volunteer work in the DR, I coordinate with donors to various good works in and around Puerto Plata. It is always necessary to request that donations be either in cash or US dollar money orders.

We had one check, drawn on a Canadian bank, that it took us over a year to cash - and that was only because we sent the original check back to the person who wrote it and asked for a money order or cash to replace it.

Why not have them deposit it into your Canadian account if you still have one and then you just take out the cash from an ATM machine

Go to any money changer and try to cash it in Pesos. You'll see if it works. US checks are no problem to cash.

I will try and ask an exchange house I go to tommrow and see if they would change it. the other suggestion was to have my family deposit it into my canadian account. that could've worked but i no longer have my accounts open in canada.

does anybody else have any other options for me?

Phone the Canadian embassy and see if they have knowledge of any place you can cash it. If you have a bank account in good standing you should be able to deposit but you might have to wait a week or two for it to clear.

Option 1: if you trust your family, have them sign the back as though you signed it, and write 'endorsed to auntie xyz'. auntie xyz deposits the cheque in her personal account. wires you the money - total cost - the wire to send you the cheque. if the cheque is over 10g's have auntie xyz break the payment up into multiple wires spanning over a week all under 10g's.

option 2: find a gringo that you trust here, and do the same. ie. assuming gringo goes back to canada often enough. this time however, it's your real signature as auntie xyz has fedex'd you the cheque.

Option 1: is forgery
Option 2: Who can you "trust" these days?

Financial advice is not your forte papi.

This is the only option I would go with as one who has had someone deposit a cheque for me in Canada whilst I was in DR (albeit not govt issued) and I could withdraw the funds in pesos in DR if need be. As long as you have someone in whom you trust and have confidence, get the bank to issue them a bank card to carry out transactions of this nature. (I authorized this ahead of time, not sure if you could pull it off from a distance, unless you have a could contact at your home branch).

Don't know why you closed your account in Canada but that's your business. The only viable solution is to, on you next trip back. open an account and have your cheques deposited there. Get them to issue a bank card and withdraw it from here. Go back ASAP. If your cheque is not cashed in a timely manner, you could have problems.

Technically option 1 is forgery, but surely you've been in DR long enough to work around the rules a bit.

If not, then just have them fedex the cheque to you, sign and endorse the back to them, and fedex it back to them. total cost 80$. (or save hte 80$ and have them forge your signature).

Have you done it before? When I'm in the DR I'll have a few checks instead of cash to be safe. I just want to make sure that cashing US checks drawn on US banks are safe.

And must you need a bank account or can you cash it without one?

there are canadian branches in the dr.
open an account there...
get your family to deposit the cheque into that account from a branch in canada...

7-10 days it's cleared :)
and you still have a canadian bank account if you need it :)

Many cambios will do this for you. Bring a copy of your passport or cedula with you and they will cash it for a small fee.

before planning on using fedex to send the cheque back to Canada, ask their Branch Here if they still allow Checks in their Envelopes.
for example UPS does not allow to send Cheques from here to the Outside, while they do so for example from germany to Here, but not from Here to There.

WOW. It all sounds so complicated.

Just out of curiousity, can anyone give a fairly brief explanation as to why this is so complicated?

Two words: ScotiaBank

it's a Canadian bank - that has been doing business in the DR for approx. 90yrs now.

I hope that this helps.

Canadian Check

Very simple:

1.) Deposit into a debit account in Canada that you can access at an ATM in the DR or

2.) Have your family wire transfer the money into a Dominican Bank account in the DR.

Wire transfer is the most secure way of insuring that the money is deposited into your specified account without being handled by too many people in the DR. The money is then in your account for you to access. It may take up to 48hrs for the money to show up in your account.

3.) You could send it Western Union, but then that involves other steps which are not as secure.
