How expensive are cell phones in the Puerto Plata area? If I call someone's cell phone from Canada will they be charged for the call also? Thanks!

All incoming calls are free.

All the incoming calls to a cel phone in DR are completely free. You will be charged for the call as a long distance but on the receiving end, the call will be totally free.

Re: All incoming calls are free.

How is the reception on a cell phone when speaking with someone in the USA? What is the best kind of cell phone to buy in the Dom Rep? Thanks for any info

Look, I believe the quality of the calls depend on how good you get your signal at the location you are in the Dominican Republic! Some places are excellent - others are just about to no signal at all! They still have a lack of antennas over here!

For the cellphones, you may buy one and connect it with the prepaid system from codetel - to me that's the cheapest way to go! (Conmpared betwenn codetel / tricom / orange)

Good luck!

Henry

(You may buy a Motorola or Ericsson, they are pretty common over here!)

Re: To Debbie

I agree with Henry regarding signal/reception quality and would also recommend Codetel prepaid as an inexpensive alternative to monthly cell service. I prefer Codetel to Tricom because I have always had trouble using prepaid calling cards (from the states) to call Tricom cell phones. Perhaps Codetel maintains the master directory of phone numbers? Just a thought.

Hi! The best thing you can do, it's bring your cell phone with you, you just have to go to Codetel when you get there with your cell phone, it's free and they will give you a line. You just have to buy phone cards after. There's no monthly charge. And for the lines, it depends, somedays the line is very good, somedays it's very bad. But generally, that's fine!
