just to let you people know you can take one of your cellphones here from your country and it can be activated for use with a calling card. a small fee of 300 pesos will apply. You will need a receipt of some kind . The government here needs to know its not stolen. This activation can be done in 10 minutes to 24 hours. It all depends on weather the phone is new or old. newer phones will be 150 pesos more, because the programing of the phone is tough to obtain(new to this country) IF you are on a business trip here it is great to have phone use for a month .Anything over a month of non use will be disactivated automatically. I am thinking of starting a cellphone sitting service(you heard it here first) where I could hold businesspersons phones and introduce a calling card once a month so that person would be able to hang on to the same telephone # .they then could actually make up business cards here. contact me at soscellular@yahoo.com or call me carlos at 809 596 1205 we speak spainish and english

If there is a lock code you need to know it and bring it with you to the DR. You don't need a receipt because no one asks. TDMA is not workable in the DR so if you have an AT&T or Cingular TDMA phone, leave it home.

Just my .40 Rd from a guy in the Cellphone business in the US.

I didn't have my code and it cost me an additional $100. It's a Qualcomm phone through SprintPCS (incidentally the worst service company - stay away - FAR AWAY!!).

Something i find unique here is once it's activated, and you have a number, you don't get charged for incoming calls, or perhaps I should say, if you have no minutes left on your service/card, you can still receive calls.

"Call me, I can't call you!"

Word is born!

new law or should I say ley cellphone stores who do not have a receipt and check out the phone with the government will be fined 200,000 pesos and that should put them directly out of business.(for just one cell phone) they are asking now.I don,t know how long this will last, they are trying to stop theft. I heard,it was the large compnies in the states that were complaining of theft.

I'm not sure how they determined it was my phone, but I did not have to produce any paperwork - just don't have it handy.

Sprint is the biggest theif in the business, they should be put out of business.

I have a verizon wireless here in Western NY and last time in Santo Domingo I bought a codetel phone card and was able to use my cellphone for out going calls. I could not receive incoming calls and it would only work in the analog mode so the battery did not give me much talk time. But I did not have to pay to have it activated and it worked well for calling cabs or wife's house if we needed.

I had a TDMA (Rogers/ATT) phone which of course is a paperweight and an old crappy analog StarTac had battery life of 4 minutes so I finally just bought one in the DR. If you are there often enough it simplifies the process of trying to make sense of inbound, outbound, roaming, etc. $100 US delviered was worth it.

For twice a year tourists it would be a lot though an hour of calls not roaming back to USA might pay the $100 even at Communicard prices.

Sprint and Codetel

jazzcom, is the frequency issue why I can use my Sprint phone here?

On a trip to S.D. a few years ago I called the States from my Sprint phone (with 617 area code -boston). I was curious as to the rate for this call, so I dialed up the "Customer Care" line to inquire.

The gal on the other end was adamant that a Sprint phone "wouldn't work in the Dominican Republic."

I told her I was calling from the DR and she told me "that's impossible."

I was going to be more persistent, but decided to hang up and ask the bartender if I really was in Las Terrenas. I really wanted to get to the bottom of this.

The bartender agreed, then offered me a free water.

When I received the next bill, I believe the charges were out of Miami?? I think it was charged just like any other analog call on my digital phone ($0.40).

I could be wrong.
I'll ask the bartender.
