Wow, wow people, slow down! Did you read the article I linked to? It says MILLER LIGHT. No. Mention. Of. Presidente. Whatsoever. Gringo is already suspecting that his gas problem is due to drinking Presidente which might or might not contain an ingredient that Miller light has.

I know what my gas problem is: Lactose intolerance. Maybe you should cut on the cheese. :classic:

I'm a brewer who's kicked around the idea of a micro-brewery/brew-pub in the DR . I drink Presidente when in DR because there's really few other options.

I do not pretend to know the specific brewing process for Presidente, but I suspect sugar is added to increase the net alcohol content. You can only convert so much starch to sugar to alcohol with basic ingredients. Adding sugar can give it an extra kick with just a little more yeast.

IMO, Presidente is just semi-fair beer. If you had a Presidente and a Rolling Rock side-by-side in a double blind test, you couldn't tell the difference. And Rolling Rock is not an especially highly regarded beer in the States.

FWIW-my favorite commercially available beers in the States (in FL, anyway) are Red Hook ESB and Sierra Nevada Wheat. I like Asahi and Sopporo for a dry pilsner.

I don't see it. To me, Rolling Rock is very high in yeast flavor and very low in hops (kind of like wallpaper paste in a bottle). Presidente has little yeast flavor and is relatively high in hops for a light/mid-bodied Pilsener.

For a truly kick-a_s pilsener, you have to go to the source. If you can find a bottle of Starbrno, pay whatever they ask and taste where all of the other pilseners came from.

The only Presidente I can compare side-by-side is what I get here. I assume there has been some damage done to it from the heat of shipping it, and the length of time it took to get to my fridge from the brewery.

I do a lot of blind tastings of beer. Not knowing what you're drinking, and not being able to see it are ways to make objective evaluations. We do that to establish a "spider profile" for different beers.

it's all fun and games 'till somebody spills my beer

it is widely understood that the presidente beer drank in the states and the presidente beer drank in the shade in DR are not the same animal. The presidente sold in the states manifests budweiser like taste specially if not drank at optimum temp and it even upsets the stomachs of some which just write it off as a lousy beer without ever having the real deal in a "DR situation". Presidente beer doesn't just mess with the dominican's psyque. It's actually great tasting, thanks to Colmado beer freezer engineers that hand you a piece of Siberia when they let go of that bottle and even if it gets sold at 200 pesos it will still keep selling like gatorade in a south florida parade and it's the only beer in this world which will have me politiquing after only 2 tall ones vetia de novia. Mama mia!....

Bohemia Especial.
Of course it's a matter of taste.

M' frog

Your my man. Presidente is now my 2nd. choice. Used to be 3rd. but Quisqueya is impossible to find. Other than tasting like water I have been served a few "skunky" presidentes from different bars recently. Hope Bohemia becomes available in more bars.

Bohemia is OK but I think mountainfrog needs his head examined saying that Presidente is a bad beer.

And it's not only bought by 'tourists and chopos' unless the entire population of Azua is made of these. I know of only 4 bars (no colmados) in Azua which serve Bohemia and the rest are filled with azuanos happily sipping Presidente!

I know Azua is small and not necessarily indicative of the practices of the entire country but it's definitely an example of the 'real' Dominican Republic. ;)
