IF THE CAR IS IN GOOD SHAPE, $40 IS A GOOD PRICE. I WAS IN PUERTO PLATA/SOSUA JULY 4-10 AND $43 A DAY WAS THE BEST PRICE I FOUND! THE PROBLEM YOU HAVE TO WATCH OUT FOR IS THE CONDITION OF THE CAR. CARS DON'T LAST VERY LONG ON DR ROADS!

You better book something soon. I was looking to rent a car for September in the DR and I noticed on the National Car Rental website that there are no cars left for that time period. They are sold out. Good luck!

There are plenty of cars in the Dominican Republic for rent. I don't know if it works the same on the North coast, but in the capital, when you show up at the airport, there will be a bunch of guys fighting for your attention to get you to rent a car from their respective companies. (They are on commission) You can go peak season, off season, whatever. You can negotiate with these people also, and get a good rate.

I got a Camry for $32 a day, including taxes and insurance.

There are certain times of the year when big conventions are held. So far two very big ones are scheduled for September and November. During those times, car rentals have their vehicles all sold out, so it is best to reserve with time if a car is essential to your purposes. There are always many taxis that can be hired on a per day basis, with chauffeur.

Lorri, you should follow the advice of DR1 and make a reservation for your rental soon if your needs really require one. You have to consider, the time you will be on the island will be during the holidays and the milennium. There will be countless tourists and expatriate dominicans headed there, too much demand for too few means of transport equals high costs. If you wish to make use of your friends car, make sure your friend has the car available to you and not to another friend, if you catch my meaning. If you decide to use a taxi, negotiate the fee before you get in the vehicle. If you comfortable using some of your Spanish language skills, ask some of the locals what the charges should be, before you begin negotiating.

Good luck in whatever you decide, have a wonderful time.
