1- Define "cheap" in US$

2- What kind of services will you be providing to clients, contents and expected monthly traffic.

3- Will you need the web site to be set up and maintained for you, or are you looking to do it yourself?

4- Do you plan to use the www.yourname.com.do or plain www.yourname.com country code?

5- Are you planning on offering your services both to English and Spanish users or already have the translation services under the belt?

6- How much space do you need to run your web site and database?

7- Do you need a dedicated server?

8- Do you plan to use CGI-BIN, PEARL, FRONTPAGE, XML, SSH, TELNET, MySQL, PHP, FTP, STREAMING MEDIA etc in your server.

9- Do you need an static IP address?
some info on this:
http://www.mapisp.com/what_is_a_static_ip_address.htm

10- ETC

To add some meat:
You can run a web site for about US$5.00 a month, keep the database at home using a static IP address to deploy the bulk of your load and save on a hefty sum every month for bandwidth, it all depends on how familiar you're with a PC and HTML(the simplest way to set up a web site) it all depends on your budget if you can put a dollar figure to it then I could offer you some ideas and tips on how to get your web site running, I own several and host some in my home based biz PC, Domain names can be registered in bulk at about 8.50 per .com and less for the .us, I recomend using these rather than the .com.do used by many companies in the DR, please be a little bit more forecoming with the details and budget and maybe some more people will be happy to give their 2 cents on this...

just adding my 2 pesos(errr I meant cents) to the post...

Nope. The hosting business is too much like hard work for very little income. Unless your into volume or specialized hosting offering excellent peering, support etc.

With hosting, you get what you pay for, like most things in life...

$73 a year and godaddy.com.... As I said, you get what you pay for :)

It's very reassuring to know that some of you only look at your website as a toy as opposed to a tool...

Two things that will never fit in a sentence side by side "Cheap" and "Reliaaaaahhhhhh=
=

=
Clunk!!!
hhhhhble" Hosting

Do you have any idea on the hard work it takes to keep a web site just to be up to date? Let alone make it useful to your net clients!

I guess you just want the "Web-presence" like 65% of those dumb web site wannabes many companies paste like stickers on the WWW, don't go that way and make it work for you not just to spam the Google and Yahoo search engines, make it interactive and of use to webbers.

Again if you disclose some more data like budget and aims maybe you could get an honest and full disclosure on this matter by many web experts within this forum...

To Pichardo

I realize i wasn?t too clear with my question, but thanks for all the replys.

TO Pichardo:

1-Cheap meant around 10-15$US/month.

2- It?ll be kind of like those internet radio sites you see, except with a webcam. We expect a daily traffic of maybe 100 people a day and maybe up to 1000 if everything goes well. We want people to be able to log in and give their 2 pesos worth also. It?ll be more of an informative website than a simple selling tool. I also need maybe 3 emails at the most in the beginning.

3- I will maintain it

4- Plain .biz or something similar

5- I already have the translation covered

6- What i want to do is have maybe 5-10 pages of information, with one page being a live webcam, on 24/7 or at least 12hrs a day

7- I simply need a reliable host, i was with apthost before and it really sucked!

8- Whatever it takes to run a webcam live 24/7, or like i said at least 12hrs a day.

9- I don?t think so, but you tell me :lick:

Thanks for your 2 pesos worth, it was very informative. I hope my post was more detailled than the 1st.

Then by all means you can use the services of a corp. to which I feel owns a good rep for services rendered and server uptime is decent compared to other so called better hosters.

http://lonexnic.com

You can setup an account with them after you register your new domain name, or you can choose to goto:

http://lonex.com

And select to enroll in a $4.95 per month hosting account in case you already registered a domain name already. all you'll need to do it's to update the DNS on your Domain parking to point towards the new server that will be given to you, you do need some hosting knowledge to tweak the server to your own needs, for example you don't want to stream the music using the web server hosting space because of the amount of bandwidth you'll need to operate and the actual contents dynamic, other than that break a leg!

Also if you want to run a forum just like this one in your web site it will cost you about $100 to $160 one time fee for the license to run it in your place, remenber that you'll need to moderate the contents or at the very least review the posts before they get pasted live on the forum, otherwise you'll have a hard time with spammers and some troublemakers, the norm.

You may want to get an static IP address to run your camera as many are offered in the web for a few bucks, I recommend that you use a highly compressed graphic management software for the streaming of live video, once you have several people logged into the the web cam it will be kind of loaded and may shut down due to stacking prob', do your homework from others that tried it before and found out all the pitfalls so it won't happen to you.

Use a private registration instead of a public one to avoid the hijacking of your webcam, a common pest in the net, Limit the # of graphics to the bares and place a strong no right click so they stop downloading images and content from your server(bandwidth).

http://lonex.com sounds great actually. And no i still haven't registered my name, i was waiting to find a good host first, and they seem very good.

The only problem was i tried to register and they would always come back with some error, i tried with a couple different credit cards and still i can't do it. Should ijust continue trying or are they having problems?

Damn internet!!!!!! :lick:

I just registered some 15 Domains this morning without any problems, most likely your browser settings are blocking a java script or something to that effect, check your browser settings, but also you must make sure that you provide the actual address used to receive the bills for that particular CC otherwise it won't register it, good luck!

I can supply you with reliable hosting in about your budget ($25.00 setup & $20/mo w/a static ip address which you DO need), however, you face two other problems. In order to transmit video you will need a high speed internet connection, and unless you want to subscribe to additional internet services from a third party, a software solution that allows you to setup your computer as a host server. Even then, a frame rate of 10 frames/second will limit you to no more then 8-10 viewers at the same time without a dedicated server and expensive software.

You might also check the legality of such a scheme, because, as I understand it internet voice transmission may be illegal in the D.R.
