Except for Xocolat ?, there is no real high grad chocolate made in the DR.

I would suggest that you bring everything chocolate you can get your hands on.

I can attest to the fact that TRUFFLES will certainly melt into an even layer from the bottom of the box if left in a car while you ride ATVs for 3 hours

Planner can verify this as well ha ha ha ha

I bet they taste pretty much the same...but its a real pain to share in that condition

Thanks.
I was just thinking of buying some and bringing it home as a gift, I know quite a few people that are into organic stuff, and chocolate would make for a better gift than a couple of organic bananas :).

LMAO

Sorry, Marc, didn't mean to ring your chimes. heehee

Just figured people seeking Dominican chocolates (and organic chocolates was mentioned earlier in the thread) might be interested in seeing the origins of many of the chocolates they consume in North America and Europe.

As I mentioned before, I work for a Belgian Chocolate Company.

In the past, interested people have tried to import our products into the DR, but because of high transportation costs, import taxes and temperature problems, it was not really a good business.

Chocolate must be stored at a constant temperature which is between 5?C and 18?C. Changing temperatures will cause Fat Bloom which makes that the chocolate turns white. So in the DR they must be transported and stored in a refrigerated truck or warehouse all the time.

That would make the customerprice really high that people can not afford it.
As chocolate is a luxury product, maybe there is too much poverty in the DR, and too less people who have money to buy it???

Anyway, when I travel to the DR I always take chocolate as a gift, but you have to speed from the airport to the refrigerator or all you get is some chocolate sauce in a box.

For those interested in making their own chocolate, in La Hortaliza tel. 567-3059 (W. Churchill, beside KFC) they sell balls of pure cacao.
