Cholera in Haiti is threat in Dominican Republic

The Pan American Health Organization (Paho) has now reported over 40 deaths from cholera in Haiti. Preliminary reports indicate the total could be of more than 500 cases and already more than 300 persons are hospitalized.

Local health officials are on the alert for any cholera cases in the Dominican Republic.

The entire island of Hispaniola was cholera-free until United Nation troops from Nepal introduced the disease over a decade ago. The UN has consistently denied any special assistance to Haiti for reparations due to the cholera outbreak in which thousands of Haitians died.

The medical assistance is difficult in Haiti due to the extreme violence currently affecting the country. The recent appearance of Canadian armored cars and a United States Coast Guard vessel off the coast of Port-au-Prince have been seen as a modest response to the urgent call for international intervention...
