Great question. Yes they have a branch in the Capital. It is one of the banks that I deal with in the states. Naturally I thought this is where I will establish a relationship and use it for transfers etc. Two or three months ago before I knew the address of their location in SD I went to a branch in the states.i spoke to one of the greeters at the front of the bank and asked for info. She knows nothing but goes and gets a list of of countries that have a Citibank branch. DR not on list. I go back to my office. Yep. Address is listed next day I go back to local branch. Basically same thing but this time I need to sit with one of the mucky moks. She goes gets the list. Lol. Same thing. Ok guys, I'm no fool and this is foolishness. She says I'll get the manager. Sounds good. Yeah right. Basically she didn't know the answer but "explained it" in some gibberish about a worldwide bank, groups, needs of bla bla bla.
Long and short answer if they do have something there they are not dealing with Johne DR 1 for is $2000 transfers. It's part of "the black hole". Lol.

The branch in Santo Domingo is not open to the public, it is a commercial enterprise only.

Don't confuse Banco Popular of Puerto Rico and Banco Popular of the Dominican Republic. While the former has some shares on the latter from the day it was founded, they are two separate companies. Consumer branches found in certain areas of the USA are almost always part of the Banco Popular de Puerto Rico.

Regarding Citibank in Dominican Republic, as has been stated already, it's open to Dominican businesses and international corporations that has operations in the DR, namely American ones. Anyone searching for consumer branches will be searching for a long time in the DR. If someone needs an Anglo-bank to do their finances, that's what Scotiabank is for. lol

One is Banco Popular de Puerto Rico (BPPR) and the other is Banco Popular Dominicano (BPD) to be more precise.

Correct. The Banco Popular in the US is part of a company also in Puerto Rico and not related to the Banco Popular in the DR.

Regardless of common names, and even potentially common ownership at a corporate level, any bank in the DR is under different banking rules than the banks in other countries. No cheap easy way to transfer funds, in other words. Some have reported that being a Scotia Bank account holder in Canada provides a benefit that they pay no transaction fees at ATMs.

Myself, I just use a Schwab card to get a good FOREX rate and they refund any transaction fees.
