apostropheman, One more thing, when you get back do this for me:

  • right click on My Computer
  • click on Properties
  • click the Hardware Tab
  • click on Device Manager button
  • expand Network adapters by clicking on it
  • find your wireless adapter and right click on it
  • click on Properties
  • Click on Detail tab
  • finally copy and paste the info that you see there

The info should look something like this:
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_4222&SUBSYS_135B103C&REV_02\4&38B5BDF7&0&00E2

Also click on the Driver Tab and post the Driver Provider, date and version.

Thanks NL,

I got tied up last night ;) so did not get back online.

The info you are looking for is:

PCI\VEN_168C&DEV_0013&SUBSYS_04081468&REV_01\4&22AD4A17&0&10A4

The Driver provider is Atheros
Date is 10/26/2007
Version is 5.3.0.85

From this info your mini PCI wireless card is an Atheros AR5006XS the chip is AR5414. So, do me a favor download and install the driver from the following page:

ATHEROS Wireless LAN 2.4/5GHz - Download Driver AR5006XS (just click on the Download button)

Try to connect to your wireless router after installing this driver and let me know how it goes!

I installed it by right clicking on the .inf file and then clicking install.

It still does not connect.

Do I need to do something else with the files? Paste them somewhere?

Thanks! :)

unzip the 'xp32-7.6.0.239-whql.zip' driver file to a folder you will remember
something like c:\wlan.
update the old driver:
  • right click on My Computer
  • click on Properties
  • click the Hardware Tab
  • click on Device Manager button
  • expand Network adapters by clicking on it
  • find your wireless adapter and right click on it
  • click on Update Driver...
  • click on No, not this time radio button
  • click Next
  • click Install from a list or specific location radio button
  • click Next
  • click to check include this location in the search
  • click the Browse button navigate to the folder you saved the driver files in: eg. c:\wlan
  • click Next and the new drivers should install.

I would power down the computer after the install. Then after about 30 seconds power it back up and try to connect to your router. See I think that the issues is that your wireless card is the card developed for the Asia market and the driver you are getting from the IBM site is for the NA variant.

I think it might be connected to SP3. Try typing 'Limited or no connectivity SP3' into Google.

I had this problem with a Dell laptop I got second hand a month or two ago. It was fine until I applied all the latest patches, then I had this problem. I found I could temporarily resolve it by switching my router off for a few minutes.

Having been away for a couple of weeks the few times I have used my laptop since it seems to be working OK so my fingers are crossed!

NL,

You might very well be correct.

Rebooting the IBM now after install.

I ran a diagnostic with PC-Doctor 5 and here are the results. Perhaps they'll help to see what the issue is in case this new driver does not solve the problem.

This is for the wired access:

Interesting...I do have a version of XP with only SP2

I'll try that if all of this fails.

Thanks!

Still no joy! :(

unzip the 'xp32-7.6.0.239-whql.zip' driver file to a folder you will remember
something like c:\wlan.
update the old driver:

Thanks for the detailed instructions.

Unfortunately it did not enable a connection.

Can you please post for me the Provider and the version of the Driver as you did before? I just want to verify that the driver is indeed installed.

TIA

BTW are you in SD?
I wish ;)

I'm in Canada, watching the leaves turn and the frost in the morning...brrrrrr :ermm::bunny::bunny:

Oh, bother! You now have the correct Driver for sure. Is there an 'open' wireless router around your house that you can try to connect to? Any router that is NOT the one you have in your house. I want to rule out any incompatibility that might exist between your wireless router and your network card. If your laptop connects to another router besides your it could very well be that your router doesn't like the way that Atheros wireless card is addressing it.

Unfortunately there are no open routers near me at this time.

I had tried before without success.

I may buy a new router tomorrow and see if that changes anything. It can always be returned if it does not help.

Don't do that. Just take the laptop with you to any place that offers free internet for their patrons or anywhere there is free internet and try the wireless there.

HI apostrophmen...

Dunno where you reside, but Marco at Rocky's in Sosua will have 'er running fine in a jiffy.

He's all wired for wi-fi and is very smart on that stuff...

Simple Fix.

Apostrophmen Try this.
1) Right click wireless Icon on system tray and Open Network Connections
2) Right click on Wireless Network Connection and open properties
3) Scroll second window down to Internet protocol[TCP/IP click on it and click Properties button
4) check on both "Obtain an IP address automatically" Circles.

interesting scenario. Some things I noticed. First it seems like device drivers are ok. The fact that your DHCP settings are set to auto same as the other pcs on the network? makes me believe the network is setup correctly. If you have MAC filtering as stated you need to add the MAC address for this new pc.

Heres what I would do now....

Power off the computers, router, and DSL modem. Turn on the DSL modem wait 1 minute until its fully operational then turn on the router and wait another minute then the computers. The order is important.

Next open you IBM computer and check in device manager to see the wirless adapter doesnt have a listed problem. So far it appears from what your describing as it doesnt.

Next goto start--> run and type in CMD for a command prompt.

Type in ipconfig and check ip address.

If it starts with 169 as in your previous post your getting a valid ip address from your rotuer.

You can try typing in ipconfig /release and then ipconfig /renew

See if this provides an ip address which is on the network. You cann what a proper ip address is by going to another working pc on the network and doing start-->run CMD and ipconfig from one of the working machines. They usually start with 192.168.x.x .

Until the ip address of the IBM laptop is on the same LAN (first 3 numbers of ip address) you wont be able to connect to the internet.

It could in fact be that the wireless adapter inside the laptop is broken if this fails or something else is providing some type of conflict. In the device manager you should see if there is a hardware conflict of some type.
