The one thing I do know is stigma with getting covid...Almost everyone hides that they had it because they are being shunned by society...I hope you never have to find out how bad it really is...sadly I think its to late for DR it’s going to go tru it’s surge because of politics..
In what regard did you have to have someone there? Myself and friends have been in both CMC and Bournegal and while it was nice to have someone there, it wasn't exactly a matter of life and death if you didn't as some are suggesting here.
It has not been portrayed as a matter of life and death. It is for the comfort and security of the individual patient.
For women, especially security. This is not limited to RD in scope and reasoning.
The examples would come into play for an overnight stay, or that of a few nights following any type of medical procedure.
As stated previously, nursing staffs within RD are not on the same level as those within other nations. As a patient, you will be checked on periodically, administered your meds, but for anything else, you are on your own.
In most situations, there is not a little bell to ring to summon your nurse. The person accompanying you can summon the nurse though.
More often than not, you will be hooked up to an IV, whether for meds or hydration or both. Try going to the restroom alone while hooked up to an IV, and it's metal stand.
There are also more personal needs for a patient that I will not get into, but any person who has ever had to overnight in a medical facility, you can easily understand why having a person with you is important.

You are correct in your evaluation of our assertions, and I believe Mr. Windeguy has been correct on this from the start, in that you can not hide from a pandemic.
The only persons that have 0 problem hiding in their houses and desiring to "wait this out" are those who receive monthly stipends/payouts through trust funds, pension checks, or government social welfare programs.

I was there due to a DVT, so had the IV for clot busting plus fluids. So not death threating was only there for 2 nights. regular foods, took myself and IV pole to the potty, there was no reason to have anyone present!! But they required it!
I've seen for myself why a companion is essential for most in-patients. I recently accompanied my husband during a three-night stay at what is considered a good private clinic. Without me there he would have been completely neglected. Even though there was a bedside buzzer, the nurses rarely responded immediately and in some cases had to be called several times. I had to leave him on his own for about two hours because I had to go home to pick up some clean clothes. When I got back he had been left without a gown, shivering in the freezing aircon that could not be adjusted. They had taken away his used gown promising to replace it with a fresh one and just left him there undressed for more than one hour. I dread to think what it would be like for someone in a weaker condition who does not have a relative or friend to stay with them and advocate for them to make sure they get the care they need. I can't even begin to imagine how dreadful it would be for someone who is not a Spanish speaker.

Let me answer your question: this is correct.
This is correct in the DR and in Vietnam, in the USA and in Cuba, true for the losers and true for the winners.
But this is not an excuse to abandon measures to control the virus. There is not excuse for the current goverment.
Even those with mild symptoms can't work for weeks - it disrupts the workflow in the companies.
Then some symptoms will stay forever - it disrupts lives of those who survived.
Then you have collateral damage: the hospitals are full and must deny treatment to both COVID and non-COVID patients.
Finally, an image of an infested country clearly influences the choice of a tourist destination. If a country depends on tourism poverty will grow if virus stays out of control.
And it doesn't have to.
The Chinese have built a large hospital in 9 days. The DR may not have the human and material resources to do it, but they can at least nationalise some Sheratons and convert them into hospitals.
