I have a credit card at Banco Popular - for years without problems.
They always call and ask if the payment is correct, especially if it is about a high amount or at a strange location. I can use the credit card outside the country too, however I have to inform the bank before I leave.
Twice somebody has cloned my credit card. Once they called from the bank asking if we were having dinner for 800 Euros in Spain… NOOOO - and my card was closed and I never paid the 800 Euros.
Another time they called and asked if I had just spend 300 US purchasing something over the internet and NOOOO - again my card was cancelled and I never paid the 300 US.
I never leave my credit card out of sight … I use it a lot and I have never had these problems you are talking about….Well, I NEVER cash from credit card machines…

This had nothing to do with taking cash from a machine anywhere. Once again, twice a DR issued credit card that was never out of our sight was cloned by someone. They also used to call us to maker sure any charges were valid, but for some reason they did not. My best guess is at the credit card processing center here in the DR since a copy of the card was used here. It never happened to us in 10 years, until this year.

16 years ago I used my debit card in a bank pop in cash machine in Santiago...i asked for the equivalent of $500.00 but it spit out 200.00......... receipt said 500.00.........kept the paper, brought it to my td canada trust when i got home..and they did an investigation ....money was put back in my account in a week or so....i was very surprised!

By the way - there is a big difference having a CREDIT card or a DEBIT card. They look very much the same and some people having a debit card believe it is a credit card.
If they clone your DEBIT card it will be difficult for you to get the money back I understand. By using a debit card the money is gone from your account at the same moment you pay with the card?(or somebody else pay with your card?)
It is much more secure paying with a CREDIT card?

Several years ago, I tried to take money from a BHD machine in the Hispaniola Casino - got a receipt and no money [something like $487 was taken from my account]. Called my bank, they immediately redeposited it 'temporarily', until I filled out a Visa claim form [my ATM card is a Visa debit card], and they sent me a notice that it was permanent. Didn't lose a penny.

Did it save you from losing that money in the Casino?

Now back to Credit Card (not ATM) fraud.

I am sorry to hear about the fraud windeguy, it is horrid when this happens no matter where the card comes from or whatever country it is used in. I have an account with Banco Caribe and any time I use it in an electronics store or I use it somewhere 'unusual' or out of my normal use, someone from the bank rings me up immediately. And when I say 'immediately', I mean it... they ring me whilst I am still trying to get out of the store that is how fast they check that it is me using my card. They apologise for bothering me, I always tell them that I would rather they ring then don't ring.

Last year we went to the US for a week and even after telling them that we were going - we went to Walmart obviously once too often because after about the third visit to Walmart they did stop the card but one phone call/email and it was cleared. Better that than a huge loss.

I hope there is a way you can get your money back from Banco Popular but I have found them to be the most hard headed of themall, BanReservas isn't that brilliant either..

This just happened to a friend of mine, she tried to take out RD$10,000 and all it did was gurgle, spit out a receipt that actually didn't say anything and when she checked online yesterday, it said that the money had been deducted from her account. She was going to 'talk' to them yesterday afternoon... damn shame... as for the Coqui... yeah baby!

Thanks. This issue is with BanReservas, not Banco Popular. They did used to call about charges over a certain amount, but not any more. That is why I suspect an inside job.

The first time ever used BanReservas - last Tuesday, the ATM withdrawal went through fine.

Just noticing a pattern of the subsequent three 2000 peso withdrawals from my debit card at the BanReservas ATM -was- taken. It just was not given to me. The ATM never issued receipts. I thought that it was my card. I called the US card-issuing company Friday to ask about it... they said that there was a security hold on the card, but that it was cleared up. So I tried it again on Saturday (it's now early Sun morning) - and the same thing happened. ... 2000 pesos lost (four times in all).

Noticed the thievery by paying closer attention to my card account transactions. Sometimes it's hard, because a charge on the card doesn't always get back to the account on the same day. Had to take a snapshot of the account activity a couple of days ago, then compare it to Saturday's activities.

Looks like I need to call the US company again Monday to tell them what happened.

--------------------------------------
ETA- Banco Popular always gave me good service- for a couple of years now, no problem. Recently their ATMs refused my card. Don't know why. Maybe it was that Security Hold put on it... so I switched to BanReservas. Mistake.

ID Theft is one of the fastest growing crimes worldwide. This will probably help the Bitcoin cause as it strengthens and integrates the safe hardware wallets options.

Update... nothing dramatic happened. I called the bank in the US for my debit card. They said that it will take approx. 90 days for international disputes.

Good news: I did find that Bank Progreso worked with no problem.
