I wanted to open a bank account as Popular but now have doubts, whats a good bank here in Sosua with respected emploees?
Banco Popular is not only the best in Sosua but probably the whole DR. I have been dealing with them for 20 years+. Efficient service you won't find better. Had one problem with my popular Credit card. That was several years ago. A hotel employee in Santo Domingo (Where else) made a few purchases from a cosmetic company in Cal. The money was back in my account with 48hrs. As for "Fraud" I would worry more about the Car Rentals.

This is very disturbing. We've been renting cars at the National/Alamo office on Independencia and Maximo Gomez for years, in fact I think the guy there knows our names and faces on sight. It's always the same fellow who takes care of us. We've never had a problem with our credit cards, and we always pay with them.
The next time you see him, tell him i am contacting directly the head quarters: National Car Rental 600 Corporate Park Drive St. Louis, MO 63105. Getting a good lawer in the States and sue him and the whole company!!!!!!!!!! I am getting my bank papers! Thank you for the info by the way!

Double Check

I just re-checked my bills - my issue was w/ Thrifty at the airport, however, I have seen - several times - people moving from kiosk to kiosk.

I don't know if they are just helping each other or whether they hold jobs at more than one kiosk/rental company.

Maybe what we should do when they copy the card is to pull out the cell phone and say "Smile - you're on Candid Camera" !
That way you have photo proof of the thief.

Might be a deterent to theft !!??

I think it's worth a try.......... anybody else??? Ideas???

I agree 100%. I wouldn't live in any other town/city in this country. (Even for free rent) Been here 20+ years and fed up with hearing all the BS about Sosua. And no, I'm not after UBH's or any other putas (Which by the way most come from Santiago or Santo Domingo) to ply their .... on the weekends.

Another credit card fraud case!

I just got hit too - I was in Santo Domingo the first week of July, and used my card at only two places - National Car rental and the Duque du Wellington hotel in Santo Domingo. Before my trip , I called the credit card company and gave them my itinerary with dates. Checked the account online about every two days since then, and no problems.

My computer is always clean, thanks to Rocky's wonderful advice, and so no trojans lurking on my machine.

Thursday, still no problems. Today, lo and behold, two charges showed up totaling about US$1300 in England which were made yesterday - I've never been to England or done business there. Credit card company wiped the charges, and closed the account. I've always been careful, and this is the first time I've ever had a problem.

That is unbelievable -- National must have big problem.

See my above post about using the cell to photo the agent.
I can almost guarantee that will make them think twice.

Its a nuisance to keep cancelling cards.

car contract

While renting cars in the DR i have often found previous rental contracts in the glove box or other compartments with credit card imprints on them. All the renters info on the sheet with a clear impression of the card #'s.

I always thought the only way a credit card could be used without being physically in hand is with the addition of the 3 digit code on the back.

National Car Rental Security Problem maybe ???

Funny I came across this thread, and it involved National Car Rental. Maybe they have a system-wide security problem that needs fixing?

In April 09, right here in Louisiana, after renting a NRC at the airport, 3 days later, my credit card was used to purchase 4 high $$$ women's purses online.
The four purses totalled $920.00 US, and had the bank not called and asked
about the sale, It would have been a few days later before I'd noticed it.

The bank and the police contacted the merchant and aranged for a package
of "purses" to be sent to the "purchaser" that used my card. The trap was set.

The fool that used the card wasn't smart enuff to use a bogus address and had the stuff delivered to his next door neighbors house, and when they showed up to pick up their "booty", the police were waiting ( thanks to fedex notifying them of the arrival date).

After some questioning by the police, this guy admitted to keeping the carbon copies of the card imprint after the rental was closed and using the card numbers for personal gain. I wonder... do they take an imprint of the cards at NCR in the DR?, and are the employees keeping the carbons to use later for their thefts? Sounds like maybe NCR worldwide could come up with a better system for caring for customer's credit information.

Just a thought

Did you rent at the National airport? Or one of the locations in SD? Let's try to narrow this down as to where the crook works....

Jumbo, that is only a VISA card, I think. I have a wholesale business, so I get a lot of phone orders that I have to ship. When I manually enter the card number, if it's a VISA card the machine asks me if the card is present. If I say no it classifies it as a 'phone order' on the receipt, and it asks for the Vcode [those last 3 #s]. If you say the card is there they also want you to take a copy of the card [that happens if the magnetic strip has been damaged and you can't swipe it]. American Express requires the 4 #'s printed on the front of the card. MC, Discover require nothing. They're the most vulnerable.

NCR is a scam guys, here is the answer from the headquarters in the US:

Thank you for your email inquiry. We appreciate you giving us an opportunity to address any concerns regarding your previous rental.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Unfortunately, we are unable to locate your International rental information in our system. The renting country is on a different billing system than us. Please send us a copy of your final invoice receipt if you received one and attach it to this email.

Please let us know if you have any further questions regarding this email.

Sincerely,

Nick Butler

Can we get LA71009's invoice? His claim will be US based.

The foreign billing system must be different. My Thrifty invoice reads something about Duty Free - but it was the car rental I charged.
I htink the foreign outlets are owned independently.

Good going on the NCR e-mail !! Very aggressive.

Quite impressed with the NCR response.

Credit card scams are going on all over the world. Here in the US and Europe as well as the Carib.

I check my balances at least once a week on line and have had a few discrepancies that have been quickly resolved. I wouldnt blame a company per se. It only takes one or two bad apples to create a problem.

I've always used Banco Popular when in the D.R. never a problem for me. I dont like the international fees and they only let you take out 2000 pesos per transaction. So you have to do multiple transactions and get the fee every time.

I never have any problem taking out RD10,000 from Banco Popular ATH's, the issue is your US bank.

Long live Alamo

Guys you are right with the fraud in DR, I went to DR in October and rented a car from Alamo (I do not know if it is the same with Nacional). Today I found that 2000$ (MXN and USD) were stolen from my account using internet purchases. One of the transactions is: "TRANSP TAMAULIPAS INT PURCHASE POS" - 70 MXN. It is clear now for me who stole my money.

I hope the police will find them because they bought flight tickets so it is not very difficult to trace them. I agree that there is a poor country but in this way they will soon have no tourists to steal from.

I hope the insurance company will refund me.

My advice...do not go there or if you really want to go...do not accept to copy your card...do not buy anything....they do not deserve to get any money...just visit the beach.
