if you want to.....just block out addresses or names

of course that's appropriate,
it is exactly the info people are asking for here.
just like JR stated above, blacken out your own name and account number on such info,
because even on a serious and very appreciated board like DR1 you never know what kinda thiefs and phishers etc etc are reading the same info, too.

Thanks to this thread and the continuous trouble I have had with my ATM-card and the limit, I opened a Euro account with Banco Popular, and transferred a test-amount to see how long it will take...

Transferring 1,500 ? would cost me 11 ? (broken down 8 ? fixed cost, and 0,2% on the amount), and Banco Popular talks about 3 working days...

This would make life a lot easier, and cheaper (otherwise almost 4 ? per transfer by ATM)

Will keep you guys posted on the "success" of the test

My Banco Popular Dollar account is used for transfers, I always take the money out in dollars and exchange them at Caribe Express, much, much better exchange rate. I suggest one does the same with euros.

my US$ account with BHD, a savings account, does not take any Fees for the Transfers, neither for the withdraws.
the Fees I pay for the transfers at my German account are the only Fees.

Coming to the DR in a week...worried now!

Oh no! This sounds like a nightmare! I was already worried about card issues so I informed my bank of my travel plans. But if the ATMs break down, cards get compromised, etc, I could be REALLY screwed and starving! I just really don't want to be carrying large amounts of cash on me in a foreign country as that seems like a stupid thing to do! Do you guys recommend traveler's cheques? I haven't used them in years but I'm trying to figure out a solution because I won't have a good vacation if I can't use my money!

Hi Emily, don't stress over this. And leave the traveler's checks home. What happened to the OP is unusual. Just bring the ATM card and one or two other credit cards, just in case. Keep one that you don't use unless something happens to the other, which it probably wont!!

I agree with rice&beans, but without the flair.

No on the Traveler's Checks. They are more difficult to cash than personal checks here. No one uses them anymore, and conversely no businesses will accept either.

The HiFX system sounds very interesting, but I wonder how they make money if there's no fee? I can't imagine the float time of a couple of days is enough to leverage a profit...

Also, Granga, do you know if they also do no-fee transfers from DR to US...basically what you do but in reverse? Banco Popular charges $55 dollars to send a wire transfer and $6 to receive a transfer.

Banco BHD charges $57.= for the Wires from your US$ account,

Wait a minute....if I wire money from US to my BHD account, BHD is going to charge me $57/US ????? Or is that to send money? My US bank is charging me $45 to wire money to BHD, I hope they're not going to charge me too!

We have a peso account at BHD- someone in the branch told my sister-in-law that we can't wire dollars into a peso account , that we need a dollars account. Is that true????

Why would you waste money wiring money here from a U.S. bank account?

Set up a relationship with a well known exchange house and just write checks on your U.S. bank account for free and get pesos here. You will probably get a better exchange rate using the exchange house also.

Hifx tell me that they make their money on the spread of the buy/sell exchange rates hence no fees the higher sum of money you change the less it costs you, in other words you get a better exchange rate. I do not know if they can go RD to US or elsewhere, I doubt it. They have branches or affiliates in various different countries because all monies have to come from a personal account for individuals. Have the stupid difficulties there used to in cashing an Euro cheque in a country different from the one it was raised in been resolved yet. It used to be well nigh impossible to draw a cheque on a french bank and pay it into , say, a german one. I suggest you route all your enquiries direct to them Attn: Neil Jones, Client Services Executive. If you are unsure of the address PM me.

I have a BOA card and I have had instances when I have tried to take money out of the ATM in DR at several difference branches and have had a problem something to do with the DR bank trying to withdraw the money as a cash advance as oppose to a retrieval from my checking account.

As a backup system I use xoom.com to send money to loved ones in DR, they also have a feature where you can send money to a bank account. For $100 they only charge about $5.00 so in any event I just use them. The only thing to keep in mind is that you have to send money in the currency the account was opened (so if it is a pesos acct you must send pesos or dollar acct you must send dollars). Beat the wire transfer charge anytime and its fast and convinient.
