Francifol is on Calle del Sol right past the park on the corner of Treinta de Marzo, you can't miss it, it's accross the street from some government office building. Francifol is supposed to be an upscale disco, where all the patrons have passports & visas:laugh: Tribeca is supposed to be another high-end spot. Posters, please chime in if I am missing anything.

They didn't let me in to Tribeca because my two cousins (females) from NY where not dressed "properly" whatever!!! They missed a hell of a lot of business from us. It was a group of 6 and we are heavy drinkers (and not drinkers of cheap stuff).

LOL - yea right, like they care!! Their club in Santo Domingo (Trio) is also pretty popular for the late-night crowd.

Stay well,

hahaha, don't fret, it probably wasn't personal. I had a bouncer stop me at Francifol, my first time there because I was wearing a tank-top, I said "Hey Dominicano, SOY AMERICANO" He said "So!" You should have seen the look in my face, so I turned around, went back to hotel and changed. When, I returned, he let me in, hahaha.

In matter of fact I got denied entry into Monte-Bar with the same shirt!

Since no one posted a response, is it correct to assume that Santigo doesn't have any of the cultural events (excluding concerts) in question?

Francifol... gwicity wickity upscale bar... plasma televisions, demasiado frio.. high priced drinks for santiago... but definately a place you can feel safe, meet people and rightly said almost everyone has visas to the US and speaks english. Tribeca is about the same, Francifol has more clientele. Saturdays I believe men have to enter in a collared shirt (can be a polo shirt) and no hats allowed.

There are a million and one bars and places in santiago but almost all are dead unless a special event is going on with the exception of the two listed above and a Rancho Tipico around Colinas area (forget the name) and Passions out on the Autopista and around the Monument.

Bembe which is down the street from Shakabana is another good place...

There is jazz on Tuesdays at Palermo; there is ALWAYS something onFridays at the Centro Leon.

However, you are right, there does not seem to be a central deposit of good information for us rich folks. Maybe we don't want the riff-raft to know what and where we will be going?????? :D:D:D:D (Last part, VERY tongue in cheek)

The reason being, no one is interested on DR1 on these types of activities. When was the last time some one solicited info on jazz events in santiago or a stage show in theatro or some social event in centro espanol? Not a single one. Everyone wants to know about the next concert by Krisspy, anthony santos or how wonderful are the aventuras. Every one wants to know where the women are, which carwash has the best looking hookers and where can I get laid or get a room for 15 bucks / night?
Hillbilly gave away a secret santiaguero hideout, palermo bar. They have regular events of local latin jazz acts. I used to be a regular there until i realized, I was losing precious hours of sleep and I was drinking way too much for my own good. You will see, not a single DR1'er will come to this bar or follow up on the info. The reason being: you will not find hookers there or cheap domincians who are impressed by your white skin.
The theater events are always posted on huge billboards right at the entrance of monumento. You can see what concert is being played or what show is being offered. Oh wait, its all in spanish and most of you folks living in the north coast won't have a clue anyway, so why even bother?
Anyway, there are plenty of social events going on in santiago on weekly basis.
AZB

By the way, centro Leon has a whole month of social /cultural activities scheduled and printed on their brochures. How many of you DR1'ers ever included attending an event at the centro leon on their trip report? Not a single one I bet.

it takes time to convert!!!!!!!!! it takes events!!

sure my gf loves the big name merenge, bachatta , salsa stars....she is still to young to have been introduced to other genres.

but when Andrea Bocelli, Eros Ramazzotti, or Dulce Pontes comes to santiago...YOU WILL CALL ME...right? Ill buy your ticket!!

but who are we fooling..will they ever come to santiago????

how many 20 somethings have been to the opera or to a play???? now how many 20 something DOMINICANS have been ???????????

I bet i can read the sign near the monumnet enough to determine who and when they are playing.

Now you know me and my gf dont need to find the hookers, and dont need to know whats going on at the car wash either, we dont need a $15 room

( we did see KRISSPY)...I wasnt impressed....she likes him...

and I never thought of my white skin as being something that could impress!!..

so just post the info from now on....got it?

oh and thanks......

Actually my post was not directed at you BOB. Now I see that you might have posted that comment in the first place. But I assure you, my post was not directed at you at all.
Now santiago is no NY or Rome, thats why its santiago. If it ever begin to resemble bigger cities, santiago would lose it's charm. Now we don't need big name artists to play here to attract attention of the world, in fact, we don't want anyone's attention here. We already have enough gringos coming here, who needs more?
now santiago does host big name acts from time to time. Even julio iglesias attended a show in theater in santiago. I bet he wasn't here to see krisspy.
Santo domingo hosts the bigger name acts and many santiageros go there to attend the events. Its common for a santiaguero to cough up 5 thousand pesos / person to see a famous act in altos de chavon etc.

I have downloaded on of her song, she is pretty good. However, I am not a big fan of female vocalists.

More updates:
The carnaval fever is begining to sink into dominicans in the cibao region. The routine is like this: the ones with cars and ride, head over to la vega. The rest stay here in santiago. The best spot to stay in santiago is las carrera av. with tolentino street. There is a bar on the corner where you can buy colmado rate beers and thats where everyone hangs out. The santiago carnaval is nothing compared to la vega. la vega is the place for real action. You must get there by 3pm on sundays. Park the car near a business where the watchman can watch your car. Just give him 20 pesos in the end of the day. Then go to the main street where the carnaval is and find a spot in someone's belcony. They charge from 50 pesos - 100 pesos / person but in return you get a high up view of the carnaval without getting beat up by the devils. You also have access to clean bathrooms. remember, if you drink beers, eventually you would have to find a bathroom. bathrooms are very scarce in that area. Keep your cell phones and wallet in front pockets. There will be plenty of pick pockets all over.

Be aware of the working girls all over bars in santiago. There are plenty of sexy hookers sitting around in ahi bar and discos (ex: ambis) looking to attract potential customers. Many girls will make it convenient for an outsider ex: dom york or tourist to pick them up. The poor soul thinks he is scoring with a sexy girl. In reality, she is there for guys like him. She will make an eye contact and then give him an inviting smile. The gringo sends over a drink and thinks he is getting hooked up. She will talk to him, order shrimps on his bill and eventually stamp her bill on his all together. They might end up going to disco or motel and then she may hit him with her request for money because she needs it to pay her university fees, rent or simply ask for money for her time. Notice the big differance, they are not like your sosua nasty hookers who put their hands all over guys. These girls in santiago are dressed up sexy cute hookers who are confused for decent girls. They will not approach you, you would have to approach them. So no need to worry about some UBH putting her hands all over your chest.
Now the professional girls are easy to spot from decent regular girls. The professional girls usually dress up too sexy, in bad taste. The hookers can't help it but look hookers because they are one. She will usually show her belly, her legs or low cut blouse to show her chest. They usually have long nails so you know they have not worked ever in a regular job. they usually drink wine or champagne in tall glasses. Notice, the regular customers / santiagueros will not talk to them or even look at them. We know who is who in santiago. Only dominican yorks and gringos will find them attractive and give them attention.
The decent girls come in groups and act and dress decent. You can tell they are decent because they don't have hookers written all over them. Ahi bar has been known to throw out women who come in to deal business with clients openly.

Sundays will become extremely good at ahibar, where people go to drink after the carnaval or simply go there to avoid carnaval. You will notice, no decent santiaguero will be seen in santiago's carnaval. It will run by chopos and tigres from barrios. I suggest DR1 folks stick to la vega.

There is a place called Bembe bar. Its located on av. Texas with almost corner to bartelome colon. This little bar features live dancers, hot girls who perform hot lap dance in skimpy clothes and bekini tops. They sure light up the place with their hot moves and booty shakes. Its on saturday nights and maybe wednesdays too. I am not sure of exact nights but saturday at 12:30am, the action is always there.

hahaha, You let the cat out the bag. The chicas in santiago are not as crude as in other areas. A lot of tourists don't know that decent santiagueras never ever go out alone to a bar and drink, the only cute chicas you see alone is in the car-washes, and you can just gesture them over. Also alot of young college girls, looking for a sugar daddy will come in groups, but you'll notice them buying a large presidente with several cups. These girls are very approachable, so are the waitresses in any bar in that area, especially if they working in a billar/bar. Nice smile and conversation and you're in!

That bar on tolentino, is that the one on the corner of las carreras down the block from Ahibar? Always look crowded when I pass it.

One word of advice, many girls who work in billar are chica beepers. The billar upstairs to cine hollywood employ many hookers. The girl carolina who used to work there is a full time hooker and now owns her own agency. She has recruited many girls from that place. I have never been inside there but I know carolina because she was in gold gym and served many of my dominican friends. She even knows people all the way up in the political level.

The bar in calle tolentino and las carrerras is called "one way". Its a chopo hangout where people sit on plastic chairs on the side walk and listen to loud music. Many girls also hang out in that corner, plus you have "bar allegre" on the other side of the street. The prices of beer is as cheap as colmado's. This intersection alone is the cause of the huge traffic jam on the calle tolentino, going away from ahibar to carrerras. People stop and chat with friends / girls and cause a huge traffic build-up in the back.
