Tourism Minister David Collado and former MLB superstar Alex Rodriguez jointly announced on Monday, 19 May 2025 a massive luxury tourism investment exceeding US$1 billion at the Playa Grande complex in María Trinidad Sánchez province, on the northern coast.

The ambitious project will introduce new hotel accommodations and residential properties as part of an initial ultra-luxury development phase. Collado emphasized that this significant investment underscores the private sector’s strong confidence in the Dominican Republic and its commitment to developing new niche markets within the national tourism landscape.

How are the tourists going to get to Playa Grande ? Via the POP airport that has like 4 flights a day or the Samana airport which has even less flights ? Discounting STI as it is more than 2 hours by road and even POP and AZS are at least 1hr 45 mins

There is a heliport on the Amanera property. This is not for your average tourist.

I remember back when the guy that built the Golden Dolphin villa was going to buy Queen Elizabeth's jet and build a private runway.

I wonder if he's still kicking? I also wonder if the villa ever got sold.

The Amanera resort has been built and operating for many years. The rich get there, no worries. I'm guessing most land in SD. Starting price per night is USD$2300.

My question was more aimed at 'how will the investors makes profits on a 1 billion investment' if the number of visitors wont be high. It was not about the existing luxury properties but the new ones that were announced. May be they will be selling properties and also have a new hotel but the question of transport remains the same but has been answered by Northern Coast Diver and Fulano2

It is typical Dominican I think. One starts selling piña on a place and after a month there are 10 more, maybe thinking that there will be ten times more customers.
How on earth could you think that amount of money would pay back?

In addition to the hotel, multi million dollar villas are being built. They have lots of land in the hills right above the golf course and the beach. A billion is just 1,000 millions.
