Do Visa Gift Cards for U.S. work in the D.R.?

Hello, I am planning a trip to D.R. in December and I wanted to bring Visa gift cards to my neices and nephews to save on room in my luggage. Me sobrino,s vivendo en D.R. If I buy the cards here will they work in D.R.? I put in a couple searchs for this but found nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Here is what I found....

I just received a Visa gift card from someone here locally (USA) and I wanted to re-gift it to a friend in the DR. When I read the information about about the card, it says that it can only be used within the USA. Since I did not want to take a chance, I deceided to forget it and just give cash.

Here is an extract from a different gift card that I received from someone else:
The Card is a prepaid stored value gift card that can be used anywhere in the United States Visa? debit cards are accepted, including mail order, online and point of retail merchants, subject to the terms of this Agreement. The Card is not intended for use at ATMs. The VISA? and Fastcard? logos are featured on your Card and will be imprinted along with the issuing bank's name.


So the long and short of it is..... NO - USA Gift Card do not typically work in the DR.

Can the Visa Gift card be used outside of the United States?
If the card states "Valid only in the United States" on the front, the provider has issued a Domestic Use Only card. This means that the card will not be accepted at locations outside of the United States.


So if the card does not say as above, it can be used internationally.


Bank of America prepaid and gift VISA cards can be used internationally.

If you don't want to take chances, just make a trip to the nearest Banco Leon when in DR and get prepaid VISA card. each one just costs RD$50 pesos and you can put any amount on it. The card can be used internationally and recharged at any Banco Leon location or via Internet Banking.
