Only when I have to do it. I don't like driving at night because too many motors or other vehicles without light. If I hit them or they hit me its always my fool. When going out at night I use always trusted taxis.
Its just to minimize the risk. If I don't drive I cannot have a traffic accident. If I am not out at night I cannot be robbed.
I have very good protection in my house incl. big dog so I feel safe at home.

I have been everywhere in this Country at night I often Drive from SD to Sosua through the mountains in Moca well after dark. The only problems I have ever encountered were shakedowns from the police wanting a "coca cola" hahha

Yes, if necessary.

I read a study commissioned by the Ministry of Health that 80% of accidents with death and maiming are at night, many during "amateur hour", three hours after dusk when people are driving home after getting a snoot full...

I am less concerned about my driving than I am at the drunks on the road, and drunks on motos without lights.

OMG you all really drive at night? Are you all mad?
Just kidding!!!
I'm like most who have replied, I drive at night regularly but prefer not to do the Sosua to POP road just because of the plonkers you encounter with no lights etc.

We don't go far at night, mostly because we live in a small beach town with not much around us except deserted roads. When we go to Santo Domingo [45 minutes away] we try to get back home before or shortly after dark. Too many unlit roads, and too many scams [i.e. brother-in-law leaving our house to go back to SD, and comes upon a motorcycle on the ground with a guy lying nearby. No one around = a set-up, others in the trees waiting for you to stop so they can rob you. He drove around the bike and kept going].

When we stayed in homes/apts in SD, we went out at night in car and on foot, and came home late, more safety in numbers.

Yes we are out and about all the time. I find the worst time to drive (hard to see the stupid motos and such) is a dusk. Try to aviod that time if we can. My wife also drives all over

Bob K

Totally agree that dusk and the hour after is worst on the rural roads. Too many people on foot and unlit motos making their way home at the last minute.

Yes and Yes, but for me there are two problems on the roads at night. Not only the motos with no lights but the cars and trucks with too many / too bright!

I go out every night, and I drive most every night around Santo Domingo city and sometimes the stretch up to Juam Dolio albeit usually drunk, so I do not consider the dangers much (do as doms do), but I never have any issues. Best thing about driving at night is no one can see I am a gringo driving and don?t mess with me at the lights, ??I could be a huge weapon crazed columbian??.....................which I am contemplating as my bumber sticker. The city is boring during the day, so is everywhere. Sleep through the day and live through the night is the best way to enjoy yourself and avoid sunstroke.

Car has ultra bright lights, make you bleed on high beams, normal low beams, dark tint on Windows, and my leetle freen in pocket, never had a single problem but its good to be prepared. We do avoid long trips at night. Local drive is fine but we are much more on alert. Nearly hit a really large horse in mountains going to S.D. Would have been a fatal accident as we were doing 70mph. Learned my lesson.

We drive at night but only locally, unless we must. No lights and lights so bright they blind you are my concerns.

Ha ha.. I had one of those last week. We drove past him a couple of hundred feet, then stopped and got out and yelled at him to ask if he was OK. He got up and started walking to us, so I yelled "bring the motorcycle" and the idiot actually picked it up and started pushing it towards us.

I yelled to push it off the road, then we got in the car and drove off. These guys ain't brain surgeons.

Ours was on the road between Nigua and our house [the one with all the policia acostado] - so no way were they stopping at all, you know how desolate it is in most places.

The only time I was really tense driving at night was driving back from SD and we had some weird electrical problem with our car and only one headlight was working and it was very dim and couldn't use our HighBeams or the car would stop working.

Man that road from Nagua to GH is DARK!!!

when these guys go out at night -- many times they are in bigger cities..... GH , RSJ etc..... no.... not on tghe dark roads... too many tricks and if you had a problem, mechanical oe otherwise....

could be trouble.... very few in Cabrera hit the road to leave town at nights.... me included

Aha, the old accident trick --- sometimes they even apply ketchup for effect

My friend ran into one of those one time....
The guy was a real pro........

Blood everywhere and his leg was about 5 yards from the rest of him...

still didn't stop......... just phoned it in

Never at night

I am really amazed at all those heroes and survivors.
Where are the people who always give the advice not to drive at night????

We DO NOT go out at night any more (we used to).
(We - just as most Dominicans - feel safer at home at night.)

We DO NOT drive at night and avoid it at all cost.

We know a guy who had a total loss hitting a cow near El Catey airport.
(It's just not worth it.)
