Does There Exist a Legal Category Less Than Marriage?

El Hijo de Manolo

It's outrageous, egregious, preposterous!

I recall the late great WW and how it was his pet peeve when posters didn't read at least some of the thread before mind-bendingly posting rehash of the same stuff that's already been said, sometimes multiple times. I used to tell him it was part of the disease known as terminal uniqueness.

You already answered yourself: Union Libre or Concubinage.
By DR Law, you and your partner "are married" or "living formally together"
You guys can formalize your relationship by an "Acto de Union Libre" certified with a lawyer and a notary.
But before that, ask to a lawyer if this affect your legal status in the US.
This! He thinks free "legal advise" is cheaper than asking a lawyer. You get what.....

OP. There is a document, procedure, law, that is valid 💯 in the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. I repeat in the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. I had it before I got married in a civil ceremony. I don't know what it is called and currently it's at my house in the DR and I'm traveling in the states for until monday return. And yes I had a lawyer do it for me with all the stamps and notary.
Speak to a lawyer.

By DR law Union Libre/Concubinage is NOT marriage. There is NO common law marriage in the DR. It simply does not exist.
I have a sister in law that lived in concubinage for decades. When the man died , the woman got NOTHING despite going to court.
His children got EVERYTHING. No piece of paper from a lawyer would have changed that.

Will a lawyer take your money to come up with a meaningless paper for your Union Libre? I bet they would.

For the OP to get what he wants, he has to create a will since he does not want to get legally married because he would lost US benefits.
The only way he would lose US benefits is if he got married.

You can have every ex pat in the country tell you that there is no common law marriage. They are right only to the extent of the title of the doc.

Ten years ago windy you posted the same thing. You're still wrong after all these years. Maybe your new law advisor CHAT differs with me but makes no difference I spent the money and time to do this correctly.

And to do it right you not only should have a will but ALSO a pre-nup before a civil marriage.

Too bad the DR has no legal team to provide the simple answer that common law marriage does not exist in the DR.
And the best the OP can do is to get a will that attempts to clarify his intentions upon death.

I have proven it by going to a government official face to face in the legal depart. Unlike your un professional law advise that you cherry pick in your spare time

Funny, that I don't feel compelled to prove ANYTHING to you. Why complicate my life when it's so easy with the right people in the DR?
