Last night (24 Aug) I went to a concert in Teatro Nacional. The Orquesta Filarmonica de Santo Domingo played ?Melodias de Mi Tierra?. It was fantastic!
The conductor, the charismatic Mr Amaury S?nchez did the unusual thing and talked about the music on a few occasions during the evening.
Why haven?t I seen anything in brochures etc about Dominican music other than the commercial merengue and bachata pumped out by the radio stations?
Listen to ?Fantasia Criolla?by Mr B. Bustamante! Fantastic! Or ?San Antonio?, a soft merengue by Nico Lora. Great!
Finally, I find Dominican music that I really like! Where can I find more of this?
It only goes to show the great spectrum of Dominican culture, IF YOU CAN FIND IT!!! I had no clue of this kind of music until yesterdays concert. And I have been complaining about ?lack of culture?in DR to my longsuffering Dominican friends... Ay, concho! I feel like an idiot now!
Now, I am beginning to realize that there is a hidden wealth of culture out there to be discovered. BUT WHY IS IT HIDDEN? What else do I not know? What else have I missed these last 4 years? Art? Literature?
Please people of Dominican Republic, you have soooo much MORE to give other than sandy beaches and the stachato pumping bachata on the commercial radio. Please enlighten me! And others like me who want to look beyind the Potemkin artificiality of the All Inclusive Resorts.
