Yajaira is a common name often heard in bachata songs, giving it that she-left-me-for-another-man quality. Yesenia, Amarilis, Miosotis, and Aracelis are as Dominican as Maria Altagracia and Rosa Maria.

This is sooo funny. A friend of mine and I were talking about this the other day. The ones that come to mind are Yudelka and Julisa.

for some reason I deslike all those names u guys are mentioning, I like more spanish traiditonal names, not so much like altagracia and ramona but others like Marta, Magdalena, Mercedes, and the boys names can be cool too, like Diego, Pablo, or combine names, Jose Luis the only problem with that is once u go out of the country like to the US u have to use the first name only. People in the past decades have come up with these strange names or these name combinations that are just crazy.

My grandfather has a cousin named Rep?blica Dominicana Argentina, and that's a first name and two middle names.

There's a kid in Higuey named Maiquel Michael, with the first name pronounced like 'Michael,' but the middle name is pronounced MI-CHA-EL.

What can I say?
Dominican female names were requested, so I went through my cellphone and listed the names I have there of Dominican women.
I can't speak for the origins.
Just know Dominican women with those names.
Complaint department is on the 4th floor.

that sounds like a Cibaeno turned Marlene into Mayleni, but if u like it it could work. I get u with Mercedes, that's funny.

It?s good to ask, I get meanings I never thought of. But you`re right!
I don`t think i will choose it cause "Leni" is very popular at the moment because of Heidi Klum.

@ Rocky: You really have a friend with this name?I knew Dominicans are crazy concerning names, but...;)

Funny names: I also "like" very much the name of one of the 5 babies: When Stefany (-->Gwen Stefani)
Sounds like the mother didn`t know how to spell her favourite artist..

My uncle's wife's name is Africa, I kind of like that name, sounds exotic.

How quickly we forget...

Mercedes was the daughter of a car dealer in Germany; he named some sports cars after her. Some folks think it's just the opposite.

ON EDIT: The Kid has a cousin whose first name is Lironl?, named after Leron Lee, an American baseball player who played for Licey one season in late 1960s.

Maireni or Mayreni is a Taino name. Capitale?os might turn it into Maileni.

Those were the current names in the phone, and I did not bother to list weird ones, like Sayanora, Kenya, Dios-Mari, Bienvenidos, Franiel (mother wanted Daniel & father wanted Franklin),

Samantha?

Would a Dominican in the DR ever name a baby girl Samantha? Is this a well recognized girl's name in the DR, and if so does it have any particular connations- good or bad?

Thanks, jeanmarie

It might not be a great choice, as Dominicans cannot say words starting with an "S" without adding an "E" before, like "Essamanta".
And the accent on the syllables would be in the wrong places.
It does not sound pretty in Spanish.
