Get yourself to a hispanic market (or prob any ethnic market) and buy an aluminum pot for 10$!!! Can't get concon with a stainless steel one.

I can eat rice almost with anything, but not with soup or Sancocho, i don't see the point of eat Sancocho or soup with rice:cheeky:

Muchacho! Un sancocho con un "chin" de picante y limon, con un arrozito blanco y aguacate........... YUMMMMYYYYYYYYYYYY

i am making sancocho tomorrow, thats it!!

In my house, we cook straight DR style, I have "DR pots" for heavens sakes! LOL.

BUT on some days, the husband wants an all american meal, and there comes the medium rare steak with grilled veggies, or the pasta with home made marinara sauce!

But man, i could eat rice and beans all day every day for breakfast lunch and dinner!

I could only picture this. For example, you, your husband and all your friends are at your house and it is late at night. Someone in the group says " ponte un chin de arro blanco" and then your cousin who is also there says " y el pollo guisado? todavia queda?"

My wife was born in the US, but she can cook really good. She cooks "Dominican Food" everytime she cooks. My favorite:

Breakfast:

Mang? with Fried White Cheese, Longaniza, Huevo Frito (fried egg) and of course salami frito.... OMG, want it now! lest not forget the fried red onions.

Lunch:
Moro de Guandules con coco, Bistek Encebollado (well done), ensalada mixta (russian salad) and of course tostones. SOOOO goood!

Dinner:
Moro de Guandules con coco, Bistek Encebollado (well done), ensalada mixta (russian salad) and of course tostones. (RE-HEATED IN THE MICROWAVE) SOOOO goood!

I had never heard of moro de guandules con coco until I read it on this site. We are from Santiago and I asked all my family members if they ever had moro with coco in it and they said no.

Are there different ways of cooking, flavors based on regions? Or has my family been living under a rock all these yrs ;)

Mmmm...my favourite is stewed guandules con coco on top of the rice, instead of moro.

The recipes do change a bit in different areas. It would seem they use coco a lot more in saman? than elsewhere (who knows why though...)

While back in UK, a relative bought me a very handy gadget.......a dominican cook book!
I havent tried any recipes yet but wow, it looks great!!!!! Such a range of dishes and they seem pretty straight forward. I look forward to creating a dominican masterpiece in the near future.....now my lasagne has been prefected and my calzones and my lamb rogan josh!!

Maybe i should copy the book as im sure it could be very helpful to people here who are interested in cooking dominican food.

My family comes from San Fco. de Macoris and they are big on the coconut flavored food. I remember my mother used to cook Guandules con Coco on with white rice and "bacalao" with egg and potatoes for Semana Santa "Holy Week" or "Easter" , this was great. Also, she used to make white rice cooked with coconut milk. But the moro de guandules is really excellent, it is prepared the same way it usually is, just add coconut milk to the mix and you're good to go.

Dominican cookbooks in English are available from the DR1 shop, along with a complete selection Dominican cookbooks in Spanish.

Yes, when I visit Barahona I have a hard time with the food because some places use Aceite de coco..but I've never tried the food with coconut milk.

LOL, las pelas que me dieron por quisquilloso no fueron pocas, no solo a mi, a mis hermanos tambien.

Yo no me quedo atras, I was beat almost every day and my father would throw the iced cold water on me when I wouldn't want to eat (berenjena, arenque, chicken or beef that wasn't fried) I was really "ma?oso" as my mother called me.

Fortunatelly, I have learned to like certain things, except CHIVO that is...;p;

Funny thing is that as a kid you couldnt make me eat bacalao, or berenjena or locrio de arenque. BUT NOW, i eat EVERYTHING and anything.

No one was allowed to be picky in my house, mami resolvia todo con un cucharaso, and would say "there is nothing else to eat, you are eatin WHAT I MADE, period". There were no two or three meals in my house for one MEAL TIME. Its whatever was made.

I am trying my best to ensure my kids are not picky eaters, EVERYTHING I MAKE AT HOME (i cook every single night), they eat, i dont indulge them in the chicken nugget and pizza craze, those are treats reserved for outting, otherwise, its HOUSE FOOD, DOMINICAN FOOD. I mean there is nothing more delicious! YUM. So far, they eat everything I make. Who knows if when they are older they becoming picky!
