The Dominican Republic men’s basketball team has a chance of playing in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016. With the US win of the FIBA World Championship on Sunday, 14 September 2014, Team USA advanced directly to the Olympics. Given that another leading team from the Americas, Brazil, has qualified for the Olympics because it is hosting the event, two slots are available for other teams. The DR now needs to compete with Argentina, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela and Uruguay for one of the two available slots.
In the recently ended FIBA World Championship, the Dominican Republic national basketball team finished in 13th position of 24 teams.
