The travel magazine Travel + Leisure published a list of the best destinations after retirement, considering factors such as the ease of obtaining residence, the health system, the climate, and the cost of living, among others.
As global travel has increased over the years, many seniors want to continue the adventure of exploring the world by retiring abroad. Others move to new places to stretch their retirement income or enjoy new experiences.
According to recent data from the United States Social Security Administration, more than 700,000 Americans receive their payments abroad.
Medical care, visa requirements, local culture, taxes, and living costs are all part of the decision to retire to another country. With so many considerations, it’s a good idea to get professional advice, and advisers recommend spending at least several months in a potential retirement destination before you make a move,” said the magazine’s travel specialists.
In that sense, 10 of the best places to retire in the world, according to Travel + Leisure, are:
1- Panama
2- Portugal
3- The Dominican Republic because it is considered one of the least expensive Latin American countries for retirees, according to data from the magazine. In Santo Domingo, the capital, the cost of rent is 90% lower than in New York, and the cost of living is 55% lower. Its location is another advantage for some retirees.

Could not agree more about living in Santo Domingo and fighting traffic all your life. But as far as a retirement destination you cannot do much better as a whole then the DR. Just avoid SD like the plague...........

I have to be honest, im not that impressed with SD it smells to high heaven and sadly looks like a poor city. Not a place i seek to frequent. I have found a few spots which are fantastic and located in tourist areas , and on the beach which suits me just fine. Cost of living for me isnt really a great concern but it is significantly cheaper to live here than my country of birth. Property prices are much lower and if you have a few dollars you can buy an apartment 1 bedda with all the mod cons near the beach for $120k (where i live). Insurance is always an issue for me, it maxs out at about 30k for top of the line, so i maintain my own in my country of birth. My base line expenses add up to about 20k (not including fun, or rent) or $1700 a month ...for all my insurances, food, car , pool, cleaner etc. Im a single man. I am however living a great life on $45k a year...a very good life. I dont lift a finger. Am i glad i moved here, yes. My only sticking point is engaging in necessary business with Dominicans. My advice, regarding doing business with the Doms....just dont, unless they come highly recommended. I have found in almost all of my business dealings they were looking for an angle. Still, i walk on the beach , swim in my pool at my beach house, and eat $10-15 meals in restaurants every day.....could i have this life for this price elsewhere probably but where im located it suits me just fine

They used Santo Domingo as the basis to compare the DR to other retirement destinations. It's widely known that SD is one of the most expensive areas in the DR, so for the most part it gets cheaper elsewhere in the country. Retirees can definitely use that.

For anyone who wishes to retire and live a life of leisure Santo Domingo would be your WORST choice. The DR is no small country and has many places other than Santo Domingo where you can find your life of leisure. And at a low price, or you can live at as high a level as you wish depending on your resources.................
