Naval Support

To my fellow Dominicans in the US Armed Forces in Iraq

Am a US Navy sailor stationed onboard The USS Peleliu (LHA-5), which carries Marine Expeditionary Unit 13th.
We are part of a 6-ship convoy patrolling the Persian Gulf.
We are here to support you.
We have only 4 Dominicanos in my Ship. We are the few the proud.
For thos who are in thre Battlefield, hopefully you will come back in one piece. Our job is to ensure that?.
Se cuidan?
Very Respectfully

Jimmyrisis?

Please be careful of how you write, even on this forum. Revealing unit #'s, etc in a combat zone is still a courtmartial offense.
I wouldn't do it, but some eager-beaver Ensign/JG might!
Just a friendly cautionary note, my friend---
AND KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!!!!!!!

Texas dont worry abiout Jimmy. He was putting out public knowlege information. This is what is realeased to the news services and posted on public web pages by the US DOD he was not breaking opsec.
John.
P.S. I do feel that the info he was refering too should not be public knowlege but it is.

you just have to forgive an old "Mustang" for wanting to protect the troops.
No offense/denigration intended, but that warning was the result of 27 years USAF service upbringing.

cold war trained myself

Texas when we went to Iraqi freedom on my ship we started training for gas and small boat attack and all the things we had trained for during the cold war. The JO's were really freakign out trying to figure out how to make everything work. It took all of US 80s trained NonComs to first stroke thier egos and then to tell them what to do to get it done.
The trouble is we know when we oprder food for our ships, arrange flights or spare parts all of that is going to leak. So we acknowlege that put out the info as piblic knowlege and then Guard the hell out of the ships while in port. Do not know if it is right or worng but I know we had more locked and loaded guns topside than I seen in the 80s when I was in the gulf.

The good news for you all is that we are not fighting the Soviets or any other large state force with a global reach. So I believe, outside of Iraq, a good capability to gather real time intelligence and plan an attack is not there. U.S. bases in countries where the population is heavily Islamist, are dangerous (example U.S.S. Cole attack) due to the Al Qaida threat but hopefully a lesson was learned from that terrible event. The global threat is from Al Qaida but if we look at the timeline between major attacks, its about every 3 years. So they are much more dangerous to civilian soft targets than you all.

Be careful out there.

New Attack

This morning at 4:00 Iraq time, the Dominican base was attacked by mortars. Also, this is the fourth attack against the Dominican soldiers in Iraq and the second in this week against latin american troops, two days ago the Tegucigalpa base (Honduras) was attacked with mortars and rpg.

I was driving my car to work this morning listening a Spanish morning show here in Central Florida when they announced that news. So far they don't know if there were any injuries in both attack. And for those here that they don't believe this, this news against was not in CNN or WABC or WCBC.....and also, the Dominican government is quiet about any news like this.

The quality of news reporting of the agencies cited falls in the category of "Yellow Page Journalism", that is to say, sensationalism.CNN is probably one of the worst offenders since they built their reputation on their reporting during Desert Storm and subsequent. Other agencies seem to be following their lead.
I won't go further with this conjecture since it is off thread, but viewing the present, in light of the past, I take TV breaking news with a grain of salt and wait for other developments.

i am temporarily back....

well everybody i have returned from my missions in the desert. i have kind of inactive on dr1 for quite some time but i had many missions in iraq to accomplish...i was setting up many satellite and muliuse networks all over iraq. i guess that was just to help the oncoming units that are going to take our place. i was also setting up about 12 internet cafes in iraq...well iam still the only dominican in my unit, and where i am located i have only seen one other dominican.. funny but he kinda resembles sammy sosa...i will be transitioning to go back to the states here in like a few weeks so i hope to keep in touch with everybody when i return. so i dont knoe how many more time i can post. as i have a few more missions to go out on before we redeploy back to texas...man guys you should have been here in the summer time when it was reaching 135 degrees by lunch time.. and 95 to 100 at nine o'clock at night...well i have to go because as much as i would like to sit here and write all day i still have a job to to here. and my shifts are not easy... 7 days a week, 15 1/2 hour days....
