Finally - Dominicans in LA!!

I moved to LA @ 2 years ago and have yet to meet the first Dominican - most people in CA do not even know where the island is located - I'm tired of the geography lessons. Maybe now with all the press surrounding Angelica Jolie since she is filming a movie in DR, people will know more about us....let's just hope.

I work in LA and am always in search of another Dominican. I just came back from DR and it was so nice to see people that look like me - here I'm considered exotic- who knew :lick:

Is there a Dominican social club in LA?

PS:Why is it that to listen to the latest merengue you have to go to Baja Fresh?

I live in LA and I'm Dominican!!!

First of all!! I will like to apologize for any mistakes I make and at the same time appreciate any help I could get from you guys (the experts!!), because I AM A NEWYYYYY to this forum!!!! I do accept advises, compliments, and are open to any opinion you might have + or - to my post!

Anyway!! I just want to let you guys know that I'm Dominican residing in LA since 1992, I do know lots of Dominicans in LA, from all types of life levels, from the doctor to the shoe shining guy, and needless to say to the Domincan hairdressers and the goodies seller; due to the fact that I used to work with the directives of the Dominican Club here in LA. I like the fact that some of you are trying to find your RAZA; It's hard enough that we are so far from our little Island and not to be able to find our own.

My email address is igarcia@quislaw.com

I did not know that there were this many people in this city. I say that we should, if we can not find one, create our own little social club. I know a couple of people that own restaurants and lounges. I will hit everyone up in the future with more details. For now let us build a little e-mail address book to swap information about little events that could build our fellowship a little more.

okeystokey@hotmail.com that is my e-mail address.

Ha Ha

I've got the "You don't look dominican" line several times!! And the "How did you learn spanish line is also a classic.

Well it seems there is still hope in L.A for dominicans! I'd love to organize a dominican in the park party somewherein Los Angeles. A little area where we can cook up some food, network and dance and get closer to our heritage with an event that could bridge a gap in the numbers of Dominicans out here.

Just had lunch with two Dominicans in L.A. and am on the way to meeting another in downtown L.A. just to chat. If a park event already exists like this, then please inform me more about it. If it doesn't, then I'd love to try and organize this with say the parks and recreation or something...Any info you may have relevant to this idea, or if you're interested in helping to organize this, drop me a line.

here is a post from a friend of mine (Dominicana en L.A.) with the latest news on a get together celebration for our independence day..

To all of you who are trying to meet some Dominicans in LA, I just got informed by the Dominican Club president that we will be celebrating 27 de Febrero @ the Hollywood Park Casino, February 25th, tickets are selling for $20.00, including the food and they will be having one of the best Dominican DJ in LA, Pedro el Sabroso. He was the DJ at this Downtown club called Grand Avenue for many years. He can really bring it down when it comes to music!! I'm very excited. Please feel free to contact me if you need any info igarcia@quislaw.com. I can't wait to meet some of you!!!

Oh, Oh!! !!!

NOW IN ENGLISH!!!

Oh, Oh!! I' going to speak for myself only! My apologies if for any reazon I have offended anybody by not expressing myself in English when writing to this forum, but the only reason why I've done it is because I have noticed that most of the people who do post in it, do it in English!! No matter where they are writing from!! Plus you must understand that not everybody in this forum speaks Spanish, and we Dominicans should be proud of others been interested in our culture or our country by any means and we have no rights to deprive them of their interests. And Yes, I'm a Dominican living in LA, I do follow my culture and what's going on in my country very clossely, I do respect other people's interests but formost I love the fact that there are other people from different nationalities trying to be in contact with us; and no matter what language they are belong too, I will try to help them get the best of my country.

BlancoOsiris,

Tampoco te quiero ofender, pero si te molesta tanto que la gente escriben en ingles, no deje mensajes en esta tela (thread). Aqui no hay reglas de que idioma debemos de escribir, not every "Dominican" knows how to articulate as well in grammar like other "Dominicans" (como yo) but I can assure you that we are all just as "Orgulloso."

my 2 cents

I'm going to chime in too!

I joined this forum to become connected to other dominicans in my area, not to be put down 'cause I dont write in spanish. The idea here is to get to know each other, so can we just get along?

I didn't

reply to post #33 because I did not take him seriously. If anyone is bold enough to ask complete strangers to have pride in, and use, what he assumes is their native language, he/she should at least have command of that language.

No participo en conversaciones negativas porque son contraproducentes. Hay suficiente sitios virtuales para entretener ese tipo de conversacion; este no es uno de ellos.

Btw, I'm thinking of going to the 27 de febrero celebration at Hollywood Park on the 25th., anyone else?
