Dominicans in Orlando

My husband and I just moved to Orlando in July and have already met alot of Dominicans in the area.

There is a great restaurant off of Oak Ridge and Ornage Blossom Trail that for the most the clientele is Dominican and I believe the owners are too.

I have also seen alot of Aguilas hats on recently.

It's called "Casa de Las Empanadas" - funny I forgot to put this one in my list of the best Dominican restaurants in the Orlando area. I eat there all the time when I'm in Orlando and they know my face well. The owners are from the capital and el senor es un sangru desafortunadamente.

Also, if you want to try a great latino restaurant in Orlando, arguably the best although not Domincan try "Pio Pio's" at the corner of Kirkman and International. They have a mojo que se come con platano verde y ensalada que no tiene comparison!

Pio Pio is also wonderful, going there for lunch today.

And to answer your question I have enjoyed Orlando so far, everyone i have met has been very helpful in educating me about things around here i.e. restaurants, childcare, schools, etc.

I truly envy you. If you don't know this already the mojo is actually great on the roasted chicken. However, the bistec encebollado the size of a baseball mitt does fine on it's own! Oh yeah, don't forget the salad - I'm hungry already!

There are clubs all over town that have the music you want - just pass by any bodega and they'll have the flyers. There are also two radio stations that cover that info as well 98.1 and 100.3 I think.

Also, there is a restaurant called Quisqueya restaurant at the corner of Orange and Oak Ridge Rd. that has live music on the weekends although the food quality is not consistent.

Quisqueya is closed. Not sure how long but it sits as an empty building with faded painting on the outside.

Damn! That's bad news as the proprietor was a nice Lady from the capital. The location really wasn't that good I suppose as most people probably wouldn't won't to go there at night.

The other Dom restaurant that has live music on the weekend is El Sabor Domincano on 192 in Kissimmee. Tell the rubia chiquita con el pelo moreno que el gringo con la mujer mocana sent ya.

I heard on 100.3 a festival for Dominican Indpendence Day but did not get any details. Does anyone know about the festivities in Orlando?

AJ,

98.1 is advertising a concert festival at Lee Vista park on the 25th. It starts at 11am, & tickets are $15(not sure if you just buy there or if they can be purchased early). Tono Rosario, Frank Reyes, & a bunch of other artists are performing.

This is the 3rd consecutive Festival celebrating Dominican Indepence day. It is on Lee Vista Park/Semoran Blvd. very close to the airport. Amarfi, Tono, Omega, and a few others. Last year even some MLB players showed up.

Oh yeah. I went last year. I had a lot of fun with Aguakate's songs (especially the one about Alex Rodriguez) .. LOL I just didn't like the fact that it is in a park and you have so many people and so few portapotties... Not sure of the spelling.

Thanks -

I will be there with the children. My daughter's favorite song is Princesa and she heard that Frank Reyes was going to be there.

They told me that the dominican festival in Orlando this year was great...did anyone go....????

It was great. The first artist was Omega. I did not like the way they sounded too much. I guess because they are new they don't have their sound right.

The second artist was Frank Reyes. I loved his performance. Third was Amarfis. Fourth was El Torito Hector Acosta and the last one was To?o Rosario.

My favorite performances were Amarfis, El Torito, and To?o. They sounded impeccable. They performed many of their songs (old and new) and for a long time.

They had more portapotties this time. I did not have to wait too long to use the bathroom. They did have less Presidente stands but that's ok. I bought all of my beer in advance and just had to go and pick them up whenever I was ready.

I had a really good time.

I am a New York-raised half-Dominican half-Cuban, and will be heading down to Orlando for college, where I'll be attending UCF.

I knew there was a sizeable Dominican population in Orlando, but I was a bit worried that I would be overwhelmed with a lack of Dominicans. This makes me think twice.

Thanks a lot for the input - and I'll see a lot of you when I head down in August!

Look forward to meeting some of you.

Orlando info

I just found a new Dominican restaurant during my stay in Orlando. It's called "La Dona" and it's on Lake Underhill a block east of Semoran Blvd. They have a great sancocho and they owners are from Villa Altagracia. If you eat there tell them "el gringo feo, chiquito y calbo que machaca el espanol y tambien es prive en Santiaguero" sent you!

Also, don't forget there is an office in Orlando that has Dominican Consular Services - so you don't have to go to Miami!
