Arelis Gabot - reaches high and wins.

Taipei.? Arelis Gabot, a Dominican Republic native, who immigrated to Taiwan seventeen years-ago is now the proud title holder of the first non-ethnic Taiwanese to hold public office, The China Post reported.

After receiving her Taiwanese citizenship in February this year, Gabot was qualified to hold the position of Neighborhood Chief of East Gate's sixteenth neighborhood.

In March she was formally inducted to her new position under the supervision of East Gate Ward Chief, Liu Chao-ling. ?As neighborhood chief all I want to do is service those around me and be able to make others happy,? she told The China Post.

Coming to Taiwan after being married to her husband for five years, Gabot was immediately put at a disadvantage because of her lack of Chinese language abilities. However, she quickly took up the challenge and is now virtually fluent in the language.
