This is what will turn the tide eventually on tourism.
DR built it's AI tourism on a cheap and warm getaway.
If it continues to soar in costs it will be the proverbial killing of the Golden Goose

Considering the airfare cost to most of the countries on the list (flying from the EU) , I'd say the DR with having so many beautiful beaches, is a long ways away from this scenario.

They have unbelievable cheap package tours from the EU. Airfare and AI included. Anyone that thinks these AI's are packed with Americans has not spent much time there................

I found Colombia a little cheaper than the DR, but not that much.
It makes one wonder about the 126 to 38 Euro difference, 88 Euros a day alleged difference between DR and Colombia, no?
Quite different from your personal experience, it would seem.

Thankfully I will never find this out myself and will have to rely on third parties for this information.

It is true that the price could eventually make the DR too expensive, but will people really go to those cheaper countries in that list from number 7 on down?
I have no idea what the Euros will do..

It's cheaper to fly to most of South America, Mexico and Hawaii than DR. But yeah the cost of Hawaii is very high.

I honestly thought they were packed with Americans and that European AI tourism decreased with Puerto Plata

I have been going to both countries for about 10 years and find Colombia to be slightly less expensive. The biggest difference is the DR taxi mafia doesn't exist in Colombia, making taxis in Colombia really inexpensive. Less than 1/2 the DR price.

Colombians don't seem to have a passion to rip off tourists quite like the DR. For example, the one time I was looking for a taxi in Sosua, the driver had a bunch of stupid questions which allowed enough time for the rain to stop. He asked me where is Ahnvee which was 1/2 mile straight ahead and hugely popular at the time, and my personal favorite, how much can you afford to pay?

I agree with @chico bill : Only flights to Punta Cana are cheaper from Europe. SDQ/STI are costly if you do not want a long layover or 2 stops and POP only has a rare cheap fare with Edelweiss but even that is only once a week. It is possible to find cheaper and more convenient flights to South America and Mexico (from London, for example).

There is an attitude that 'you can pay more, you are a foreigner' that leads to the gringo pricing outside of AIs. However, I think some of the country costs dont match, I believe Brazil should be higher as accomodation can be costlier there as well the tourist activies cost more if you go via a travel agency instead of buying directly.

I think these rates hold up for tourists who may go once or twice to a country rather than travellers who visit a country many times and/or stay for longer. Once someone knows what the prices are supposed to be and starts negotiating, the costs start dropping.
