Does anyone know of a Dominican Spanish equivalent for the US slang term 'dude' as in "yo, dude"? Is there something better than just 'hombre' or 'chico'?

mi pana, panal,
que pasa loco, que pasa mi loco.
But you have to be careful. Use them only if they are your buddy. Let's put it this way, a friend that you only shakes his hands, don't use them. If you use to hug a friend when you meet, then it can be safe to use the terms.

I don't know if I would go with anything so informal, primo and papa should suffice. Dude has it's own connotations in the States that won't translate well into Spanish.

What about "primo"? Yes, I know it means "cousin", and I know we don't use that in the USA. But some of us do use "cuz" (from cousin) in speech. Not me, but I hear it a lot, usually in inner city high schools. Just my dos centavos.

What about "primo"?

Why would you EVEN consider calling ANYONE 'dude'??? That sounds rude to me...and if you wanted to use it to ask a waiter about your food, as the title of this thread implies, then it's DEFINETELY RUDE...

Hermano sounds best...if you must call someone like that...you can also just say...

"Disculpe, tarda mucho mi comida?"...(Excuse me, will it take much longer for my food to be ready?)...

I absolutely HATE it when SOME people go to someone's 'house' and dare to INSULT the owner...

Get some manners!!!!

Good Lord gal, are you PMSing or something? The title was just a takeoff on the movie Dude, Where's My Car? (2000). I wanted something to Dominicanize it and for some reason mondongo came to mind.

These days, according to Dude - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, 'The term "dude" is an American English slang word used informally to address a male individual.'

I have a friend here in the States who calls me 'dude' all the time and it seems to be rubbing off on me. I was just asking if there is an equivalent term that that two Dominican male friends (bros, buds, homies, etc.) might call each other.

No offense was intended to anyone. And I would address the waiter as 'Se?or'.

If dude is insulting to you in English, then you would be insulted every day in this country! I have noticed that everyone here has some sort of name to be called.....almost every guy calls another guy dude here or a variation of it. Everyone you need to speak to has a title. We don't just say mam or sir. For example, in public, I'm joven (young person). My man refers to me as la mujer (the woman). Some of my students say profe, other people are mano, amigita. Our boss is called la jefa. Even God is El Senor. No one is just mam or sir or addressed only by name. I like it this way! Makes things more interesting!

So your question, Victor, is a good one to be asking.......It is great to know how to say dude in Dominican. You will blend in well since most of the guys NEVER even use their names. It's all pana, mano, etc. I personally like montro or montra the best. That is very Dominican/street/slangy. Use it like this.....Montro, dame lu? jajajajaja. That's like dude, what's up!?

Have a nice Sunday montro.

To Jennyfurry...may I congratulate you on an excellent choice of words! Is that a local slang from where you are living? It certainly made me laugh! Maybe not the best introduction for a total stranger ...but hey..I have been called more things by the locals over the years to ignore this one as a term of friendship or endearment, why not??? from Dona(as a sign of respect, and not of age, I was assured???) to rubia, gringita, mamacita!!! and everything in between. Dominicans do tend to use slang for their aquaintances, so why not try it? Just make sure they have a good sense of humour and are a lot smaller than you!!!

Victor...no, I'm not pmsing...It just seems like a very offensive name to call someone...I don't care if it's widely used...pants hanging down your butt are widely used here also, and I DO NOT like that either...

Jenny...I don't mind the titles in DR, I just plain HATE the DUDE one...to ME it sound VERY offensive...I would NEVER call ANYONE, here, there or anywhere that...

Bob, thanks for the explanation...I still don't like it... ;)

Hello lady,
I am 43 and hear "dude" often - in DC, NY, Miami, Texas - used by people in their 20-30's usually. I have never heard it said with intent to hurt feelings. Really, it is just another salutation - these days. Where did you hear it and who said it? I am just curious to understand why you feel as you do. It seems like there is a good/bad story behind your strong opinion.

Thanks, Samm :)

No stories...I feel it's rude for educated people to be calling each other 'dudes'...

In a bar, between drinking buddies...well, to each its own...

I just refuse to use it...very bad manners!!!

So, in spanish you never refer to someone by a nickname or something simular like: Gordita, Morenita....words that most English would think of a insulting?
