Take a look at this and think :"Haiti". From Tom Friedman;s column inthe NYT today.

"A key reason is that Taiwan has no oil, no natural resources. It’s a barren rock with 23 million people who, through hard work, have amassed the fourth-largest foreign currency reserves in the world. They got rich digging inside themselves, unlocking their entrepreneurs, not digging for oil. They took responsibility. They got rich by asking: “How do I improve myself?” Not by declaring: “It’s all somebody else’s fault. Give me a handout.”

More good news:

A DR-based Haitian friend who is originally from Leogane, a town outside PaP that was practically at the epicentre told us his family were OK apart from one person with minor injuries.

Two more friends who work for other organisations in Haiti have made contact to confirm they are OK. One was actually here in the DR and the other was in PaP but escaped harm.

Bravo Leonel!!

Do not know how many saw the press coverage of the meeting with Leonel, Preval, EU, US, Caricom, MExico, etc... here this morning

The proposal from Leonel was that all the principal and interest payments to the Club of Paris from Latin America be used for a ten year development program for Haiti

OK we can joke about Leonel proposing to fix the electric grid over there... perhaps the DR is not the best person for THAT job...

But to see Preval sitting there, so forlorn, so disheartened, and hear Leonel be so strong and forceful.... it made my heart rise for the first time in 6 days

And to watch the TELETHONS on the TV stations.. alll 5 stations, all day Sunday... and hear the soft radio music during the two days of mourning.

Oh, you Dominicans, be proud. BE VERY PROUD

That's funny I would have thought most of those things would have been taken care of. Even some of those CNN stars are starting to complaint that Israel set up a field hospital some days ago and the US none.

lots and lots of US aid has arrived .... troops, aid, USCG cutters on the way... not to mention CNN and all the STAR reporters....

Dominicans had mobile hospitals on the ground within 24 hours of the quake. and kitchens.

When the chicken lays an egg, she lets the world know. The DR has been fairly quiet about just how much and how well it has helped Haiti.

The DR opening southern sea route to JACMEL!!

JACMEL: New route established for medical teams and much needed supplies
Tue, 01/19/2010 - 10:32 ? melindayiti

As of yesterday we have a new route in place for teams to travel into Jacmel and points south over sea. This is how it works:

1. Teams travel to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic by private or commercial plane at their own cost.
2. Our coordinators in SD, working out of the FUNGLODE office, arrange transport of teams to the port at Pedernales, Cabo Rojo.
3. If major supplies are coming in, we have a trucking company and warehouse, Atlantic Packaging Company, on hand to meet planes, unload supplies, transport to the port or safeguard in their warehouse.
4. DR Navy boats will take our teams and supplies directly to Jacmel as soon as we make them available at the port in Cabo Rojo.

We are investigating now the possibility of sending teams to an airport closer to the port in Pedernales but have no confirmation yet.

It is now time to start mobilizing people in the US who have collected major amounts of medical and emergency housing supplies to get them on the ground in the Dominican Republic and coordinated onto boats. The Dominican Republic has generously made FIVE Navy boats available to transport supplies into Jacmel for the city and surrounding areas, points south of PAP. The Atlantic Packaging Company is willing to support any and all transport/warehousing needs on the ground in the DR. We want to take advantage of this amazing opportunity to quickly mobilize teams and materials to people still waiting, seven days after the earthquake, for some relief.

If you have supplies or a team ready to deploy, please send an email to Melinda Miles, melinda@konpay.org and include the following information:

- Team Coordinator
- Location in the U.S.
- # of team members, names and specialties
- Date you could arrive in DR
- Date you would need to leave Haiti and be replaced by another team
- Materials/supplies you have collected and quantities (approximate weight or amount of space)
- Other information I should know about your team
