I have been paying my girlfriend's electric bill for years, 2 bedroom apartment with 1 A/C unit in a town between SD and Santiago. Has been 4,000-5,000 mensual which I have not happy because it is even more expensive than in the US, but never the less i have been paying. This month the bill is 11,500 !! She uses the A/C in 1 midsized bedroom about half the day. We are getting it checked but what is going on here??? I assume they cut off the luz if one doesnt pay?

Sounds like she was using close to 700 kw per month and then......

She went over 700 KW for the latest month which then EdeNorte charges ALL kilowatts used at the highest rate ?

More usage these days due to the hot weather. Time to buy her an inverter A/C

Rates have gone up 40% since this time last year. Regardless, she is consuming a lot of electricity. My bill is less than 6k per month for my 2 bedroom house, with AC in 2 rooms and a pool.

Mine has more than doubled, despite all of my actions to keep it as low as possible. I am consuming 8Kwa every day now and my next bill supposedly will be 1800.

We have a three bedroom house and use the a/c every night in the bedroom from approx 10:30 pm until 6:30 am , 7 days a week , use lots of hot water and our bill even with the rate increase is only 2 k.

We have experienced quite an increase in the cost of our Edenorte power. Buzzard posted this some time ago 30th April 2022 and it does not include the latest rise.
From buzzards post No 40 https://dr1.com/forums/threads/new-price-hike-on-electricity.401532/page-2#post-5643141

Below is a Excel SS showing the electricity costs in 'real $s', based on current exchange rates at the time.
If the calculations are correct, costs in US dollars for the use of 699 kW have increased over the last 15 years
from $120.93 to $138.77, or 14.7%. If only 300 kW are consumed, the increase is only 10%.
Granted that the increase has occurred in the last few months, it does reflect the government's stated role
of establishing market rates, free from subsidies.
More increases are promised (through 2024), but we payers in US dollars have been spared much of the
inflationary costs visited upon the local populace.

I don't know how you do it(?). I have a one bedroom condo with a 12K BTU unit in the bedroom and last month I paid 6K pesos. This month will cost me more I'm sure.

split ac in bedroom, fridge, ceiling fan, inversor with two batteries, hot water tank, normal lights, tv ( but rarely on), two computers both lap tops, security cameras....etc. That's it.

I'm guessing your A/C is not an inverter model. If not, you need to take the hit and get one.

I'm bitchin' about 1800 and I have a 3/2 apartment with 2 A/C, microwave, reefer, washing machine, etc.

No, it's not an inverter type, but I've read that the most you'll save is about 30%. The other thing is, if the A/C has to run a lot to maintain temperature, which mine does in this heat, you won't get anywhere near that 30% savings.

hes gotta keep her cool. If he lets her overheat all hell could break loose, doors would open and no telling what riff riff will get in the place.

Jay, if you look at this from an accounting standpoint, it's clearly time for some cuts. Something's going on in that apartment more than a half day of AC consumption. You may have to cut staff and payroll here as well, sir.

How many kWh does reefer consume
Not sure, but I keep it as full as possible so it hardly runs. I do that by filling it with bottles of water, then take them out as needed to replace with whatever I'm going to store.
The fuller you keep any refrigeration device, the more efficient it is.
