Long time now but on some tickets it is included.

Charters from Canada include the tourist card but we pay the 20 US on exit.

Speaking of tourist cards are they all for only 14 days now? Has anyone received one for longer?[/QUOTE]

I just left after 17 days and they did not charge me extra, but I think it is supposed to be 14 days.

where nobody complains they cash what ever they can.
a prior poster mentioned to get a permission/stamp aso for more than 30 days at the migration office in santo domingo, forget about that. they close 2:30PM, that's right. they have long lines to wait from the early beginning in the morning. you have to take more than one line to get all done. you would spend that day at migrations, from the las americas airport(St Dgo) you would need a expensive cab to go there, it is a minimum 30 minutes ride, so a $300 pesos fine IF they recognize that you overdid a tourist card for a few days, would be much cheaper than only the costs for a cab.

Every year I go to the migration office in Santo Domingo and it has always taken me 5 minutes.

It's 30 days. It seems they haven't changed the tarif form yet.

c'on, 5 minutes no way.
i happily need to be there only every 2 years to pay the tax for my residncy renewal, always in november, last time 2006 nov.
it takes at least 20-40 minutes in the line for the cashier where you pay the tax, and anything which has to be paid will be paid at those cashiers in the front lobby of the migration. after that it takes an other 20-40 minutes til the renewed card cames out, ready to go.
maybe there's an other migration office which i don't know, i am always at their main building where you have to do all that residency stuff.
if there's an other place please post it, it's always helpful to know a shortcut on that stuff, i hate those day long travels anyways from PC to the capital to do some paper work aso, always full traffic on the streets, nothing to like about.
have fun
Mike

I hate to drive in Santo Domingo so we go with a dominican friend. All I know is that the building, with a big parking lot, is close to the ocean, the office is on the main floor. There are about 4 or 5 cashiers and for the prorroga it's the last cashier. That cashier fills the form, collects the $$, gives you a receipt and the prorroga. There is a cafeteria on the same floor. I don't know if we have been lucky but it took us 5 minutes in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Maybe they changed the procedure, I don't know cause in 2006 and 2007 a dominican friend went for us.

Those are the rates listed on the migracion.gov.do website.

But when we called we were told tourists are being allowed a 90 day stay with the tourist card entrance. So, when you arrive ask for the 90 days on your card. Let us know if this is not granted.

Could you tell me what office you called and the tel. number
gracias

Mariposa,
we are talking about the same building, you've been lucky or i've been unlucky.
anyways, my next visit will be november 2008, so evry 2 years it is not that big of a deal.
i agree with you with the horrible traffic in the city.
even most dominican friends don't like it, of course they don't live there, for the capital locals it's different.
when there and i don't need to buy big stuff filling the cars trunk i always drive to san pedro, leave the car at mamaita's house and take the expresso to the city, there i grab a cabbie for aorund 300 pesos driving me around to different spots and back to the bus station.
no stress, the driver knows his shortcuts throu rushhours, and i would need minimum that money for gas on my own car.
thanks
Mike

We don't have to wait for the renewed card to come out though. The prorroga for the carta de turista is only a handwritten piece of paper with our name, passport number....

Any up to date news on prices for overstaying

There seems to be some back and forth on the tourist card duration for stays. 14days or 30 days??
I see the fines listed per duration from over a year ago. Does anyone know if the prices are the same? and at where and what point do you pay his fine at SDQ?
Is this a quick easy process or time consuming?
I leave at 7a.m. flight tomorrow to USA and want to know how much money and time I should allow for.

The stamps i receive only have a entry date and no mention of duration allowed, Foolish me,I had assumed 90 days like the many other latin american countries i have visited.

Thanks

Thanks for link.

Any idea where you go in las americas to do this or just wait until they figure out at counter?

When exiting DR, in the same room you have your passport stamped, there is a desk in the far right corner. Go to that desk to pay the exit fine before going through immigration. I suggest bringing exact change because the person sitting behind the desk will not make change for you.

Interesting. I didn't realize the rates had increased. On the way out of the country I walked up to immigration Sunday, gave the guy 300 pesos with my passport & he let me go thru. Appears I should've paid 900 for just under 90 days this trip. Ignorance can save u money :)

So, basically, If I wanted I could just stay for 5 years, and if I decided to leave, pay the rough equivalent of $480 fine? Pretty cheap deal. This thread has answered the first question I intended to ask. :) Now I'll be thinking of more.
