There is no factionalism or tribalism in the DR. It is a real country with a border that is accurate culturally and linguistically. It has old institutions that function - barely, but function none the less. It would take a lot to make the DR a failed state - Lord knows The Hippo tried!

Had Hippo stayed in office? Yes, I could see the PN continue down the road of becoming an armed criminal gang and the whole Pepe Goico narco-state thing, and then who knows. And also the problem with not registering its own citizens that continues. But even in 2004 you still could not compare the DR to Haiti, Sierra Leone, etc.

In fact, I don't understand why the DR and Colombia are on the list but Bolivia, Russia and Pakistan are not.

Agree with pretty much everyone here in that The DR is nowhere close to any of these countries...but maybe we can get somethign out of this. Maybe as a potential failed state we can get included in the list of countries that got their debt condoned. Maybe we can preferential treatment to Dominican produced goods, etc...Last time I checked the DR's per capita was way ahead of more than half the countries in this world. Per Capita

So let the world think we're doing that bad. We know otherwise...I can tell you I was there a few weeks ago and I've never seen so many BMW's, Land Cruisers, and even H2 Hummers in my hometown as I saw this time. Someone is making money... Granted that this is not everyone, but there's definitely an upswing on income going on...
