I don't know if this is the proper thread for this question but what the hay:glasses:
1) I have been looking to do some island hopping or go back down to South America while I'm in DR. What I've found so far is I have 3 options for using DR for a 'hub' to other countries, namely South America: DR to Panama; DR to MIA; DR to PR.

The only one that is logical one to me would be the DR to PR, mostly because of the short distance and low cost(ruffly $95 USD). But what do I know right?

2) What is the customs/immigration experience like coming back into the country from a country other than USA or Canada and being a traveler not holding a Dominican passport?

3)What can I expect IF I am considering taking a Dominican friend with me on a vacation for the weekend to lets say Aruba, Peru or even Rio, BR? Is it going to be a hassle or can we go and have fun like normal tourists and not hassled when we return to DR foreign soil?

Thanks for your input,
yes I did Read the threads about where Dominican nationals can visit w and w/o visas.

If you read the thread I guess you know your Dominican friend needs a visa to enter Aruba unless he/she already has residency in Canada or the US. You didn't say what citizenship you hold.

I don't think it's a problem returning to the DR the problem is if they allow you and your friend to leave depending on citizenship and where you are headed to.

Thank you very much for your response. I was just using random examples for destinations and I did indicate I read the threads. I surprised that my tone is not overty noticeable for American.
Thanks a bunch

check again on the prices for flights from the DR to Puerto Rico

I just did it and it cost closer to $500 RT

that was short notice so perhaps there are better deals with a longer lead time

but make sure you get the ticket price with ALL the taxes included

Im not sure what airline/search engine you used because i've never seen a price that high for such a short flt. Perhaps your correct in assuming tht the high price is because of last minute purchase?

I just did an Expedia search for May and most came out around $269

so yes, perhaps the short notice accounted for it

but I have rarely seen flights for as low as the $95 that you quoted

there was an AA special for $64 one way.. but then it came to $$$$$ for the return

So if you ever do find a flight that is $95 RT GRAB IT!!

And send me a PM so that I can too, ok?

Ok cool. Of course I can pm once I get my tix but I actually not planning to buy my tix yet. I need to make sure my "friend" have anything in her background tht will cause a problem when we get to the airport. I was reading in the thread tht upon "occasion" dominican nationals have many challenges when attempting to leave DR. Correct me if I wrong? So ill probably be attempting travel from DR to wherever around june or july so maybe I can catch a deal around tht time.

Provided your girlfriend has the right documentation for the country you are travelling to (including transit visas if required) then you won't have any trouble at the airports.

You might run into a jealous agent that asks more questions than usual but there shouldn't be a problem unless you/she gives them one.

Does this friend have a valid US visa/residency?

No my "friend" is a person from humble means and is not very well traveled as I assume many of us are; additionally, no, no US visa/residency. I just had an idea about including someone in my excursion while also doing something nice for someone whose company I enjoy.
Thank you this is becoming very informative.

Without a US visa, travel to Puerto Rico is out of the question.
Claro!! Just a thought. I have tons of time to figure out where I want to go. If I want my "friend" to go I know i'm limited to non US areas; which is not a terrible thing, right? The Americas is a pretty big area, no?

What about Cuba? What are the requirements for Dominicans to go there?

I know it is illegal for most Americans .. but have also heard that they do not stamp your passport.

I think that used to be direct flights from Santo Domingo to Havana...

or am I making that up?

RIGHT! ! I was thinking the same thing. I actually checked(I think) havana airlines. Round trip flight operation 2 times a week from SDQ to Havana for under $600USD. That might be a viable option for me/us?

I love Cuba, but I am not sure I would take a Dominican there. Plus, Cuba is not cheap if you travel independently. If you are looking for beach and party, you will get better deal in the DR (and Dominicans party harder :) ). Habana is a special place though.I guess, it depends, what you are looking for.

600 USD is expensive for such a short flight, that is why very few Americans use the DR as a gateway to enter Cuba (you get better deal from Mexico, Nassau, Panama and even Canada).

I confirm, Cuba will not stamp your passport (been there through Mexico).

Just my 2 cents!

If you look like a "gringo" and your friend looks "Cuban," you should expect to be stopped and questioned by the police a lot. Personally, I would not travel to Cuba with a Dominican (and YES, I have been to Cuba).

If you're looking for direct flights out of the DR, you may want to look at flights on Taca to San Jose, Costa Rica. Dominicans do a need a visa, but I have a feeling that it wouldn't be hard to obtain. Nevertheless, you do not need a visa to travel to half a dozen countries in South America. It's not direct, but you can transfer in Panama City on Copa without a visa.
