Well don't believe everything you are reading on the labels. I am not sure how the law is regarding labeling in the DR, but in the US is sucks a great deal as they are not required to put all the ingredients on the labels. Quite unhandy for people who are intolerant/allergies...

I am not lactose intolerant for one reason but I can't eat cows' yogurt, milk, casein and cane sugar etc

Actually, is the chicken/beef/pork which is sold from local sources? And how about the veggies? It is best to consume foods which are in season and are local. I am having many gut problems. Is there a lot of High Fructose Syrup added in products?

Thanks for all the thoughts. This is a good thread.

It's the first time I've ever seen actual leche/milk in margarine. Now I've got even more label reading to do next time I go down... I'm curious now to know if this is the same for Canadian margarine. I'll be on the lookout. Thanks.
In the US there are very few margarines which are dairy free. The easy way to tell in the US or Canada is look if it is kosher certified (most are). Look for the "K" certification on the label. If it is followed by a "d", then it is kosher dairy. If only the kosher certification or it is followed by the word "parve", then it contains no dairy products.

Not in Playero (yet). Nacional in Santiago or Santo Domingo or La Sirena in Puerto Plata have health food(ish) sections of the stores where this may be located. But, on reflection, I do not believe the Nacional ones have refrigeration so I'm unsure. But I would visit them and possibly inquire with them as to where lactose intolerant products could be had. I'm sure there are Dominicans with that enzyme deficiency so there must be a local solution.

Playero has a (very) small Health Food section...in the back of the store...on the aisle cap, past the oils/vinegars. They have flax seed, organic oatmeal, wheat germ, textured soy protein, etc. not sure if they have any specific dairy-free products, but they definitely do have several variations of goat's milk cheese (in the refrigerated cheese case)....in a separate section they have a few brands of soy milk and other soy products as well.
