so mentioning crappy pop tunes makes you seem like you're "down" with the people? and they stop seeing you as a naive gringo? *jots down useful info* :cheeky:

Honestly, it's easy to be liked if you're a gringo (at least if your not in the tourist areas). All you need to do is the following:

- speak Spanish well enough to be understood and carry on a more than just a simple conversation.
- have a reputable career and nice car as evidence as such.
- act respectably and in a kind and genteel manner.
- wear clean clothes never wrinkled and shiny well maintained shoes to boot.
- never ever have body odor, on the contrary use a cologne.
- stay well groomed.
- always use a belt. If your pants don't have belt loops get new ones. :)

While the "bum" look with wrinkled clothes and disheveled hair and beige or dull green et al t-shirts may be all the rage in the US and Europe for "travelers", here it is ridiculed to say the least.

its pretty hard to get that one wrong. just practice saying watapatapitusberry and you'll be all set. it also labels you as someone who understands the DR pretty well
No you better try this one in Spanish;
Con este punal de acero me descorazonaria yo!!!
Vis..
Con este punal de acero me descorazonaria yo!!!
Vis
Con este punal de acero me descorazonaria yo!!!

Nothing about me is going have anyone stop seeing me as a gringo. I just want to get a few laughs in the process.

It is not my intention to change my nationality, my personality, my heritage or my identity. I am happy with who I am.

I just want us all to just get along!

Maybe just change your deodorant then, jeje. :)

Seriously, I'm not proposing that one should try to fit in as a Dominican as obviously blond hair and blue eyed gringo will never "cut" it.

I just want us all to just get along!

Cheers to that!

Thank you, Chip. We do not always see eye to eye, but I respect your opinion, and I just want to get along with you as well.

From everything I have observed here on DR1, you state your case, and you then let it go. I only hope that all of us can simply do the same.

Life is too short!

I think those are two pretty decent ice-breakers.
The fact that the speaker knows that there were 30 caballeros and the fact that he knows a little about raggaeton and can even say that word speaks volumes as to his desire to converse and have fun.

This is not nuclear science seminars we are conducting, it is small talk, ice breaking and making nice....

And it's so much better than: What's your sign? I'm a piscis!

I have been going back and forth from there for 38 years, even though I am mixed with Dominican blood I look like a gringo and I only bust out the spanish after I recon what the locals are saying in the spot I am at. I have only had a few problems there and they were with people who don't respect themselves, let alone gringos.

i'm telling you guys, that watapatapitusberry is one of the funniest things for a gringo to say to a dominicana!

here's another one a dominican guy gave me last night:
"tu eres la pitufinaa mas azul del planeta de los pitufos"
(you're the bluest smurfette on the smurf planet).

yes, they sound weird here in english, but try, even by text message and you'll see :)

I've been saying it to people and getting laughs since you first posted it yesterday.

I'm going to try out the 'pitufos' line.
