They have a stranglehold on the country’s infrastructure, from police stations to seaports. They have chased hundreds of thousands of people from the capital. And they are suspected of having ties to the 2021 assassination of Haiti’s president.
Western diplomats and officials say the influence and capability of many Haitian gangs are evolving, making them ever more threatening to the Kenyan-led multinational police force soon deploying to Haiti as well as the fragile transitional council trying to set a path for elections.
With their arrival just days away, the 2,500 police officers will confront a better equipped, funded, trained and unified gang force than any mission previously deployed to the Caribbean nation, security experts say.

An earlier version of this article misstated the amount of cocaine that diplomats said was stolen from the Haitian gang leader Johnson André. It was two tons of cocaine, not 2,000 tons,

2,500 police officers are going into Haiti? Since when?

Windy. I think the article is referring to the total multinational force including the police officers from Jamaica, Belize, and the Bahamas. 1000 of these are the Kenyans. If what the article is saying is true about the gangs foothold and funding, the multinational forces have no easy task ahead of them. Obliviously the gangs took advantage of the months long intervention delay to reinforce their capabilities. I was hoping for a less violent outcome but this is going to get ugly very quickly if what the gangs are saying is true.

Of course they probably totaled all of the empty promises up to 2,500 when all that is coming is 200 Kenyans for now.
If that even happens...

A delegation of Kenyan “command staff” has arrived in Haiti, according to a law enforcement source in the country, ahead of the long-delayed arrival of a Kenyan-led multinational security support force in the Caribbean nation.

The delegation is expected to assess this week whether equipment and facilities for the foreign police forces are ready — an assessment which will be decisive in determining a timeline for the deployment, a source with knowledge of the preparations told CNN.

Members of the delegation are also expected to meet with US and United Nations officials in the country, sources said.

The mission is scheduled to launch by the end of this month. A UN-managed trust fund for the mission currently contains $21 million, provided by Canada ($8.7 million), France ($3.2 million), Spain ($3 million) and the United States ($6 million). Personnel for the mission have been offered by the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belize, Benin, Chad and Jamaica, in addition to Kenya.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Tuesday defended US funding for the mission in a Senate Foreign Relations hearing, warning that Haiti is “on the precipice of becoming an all-out failed state” without international support.

Clearly, highly trained top secret forces, that’s what we know these places for!

Good point. The Kenyans were beginning to sound quite impressive with their training and backing from the US. I looked up Chad. It’s poorer than Haiti. They may like it better there. Haiti has some nice beaches.

Let the gangs fight it out to last idiot standing. Then go in and clean up those a**holes as well. The sooner that cesspool cleans itself up the better.

I think you are asking for too much.

When does the Kenyan BBQ start? In a month or two?
